(1) A concise review or recapitulation of the video.
What is the main point of the film/video?
The Brain by David Eagleman- what makes me.
Through this video, we get to learn that, the brain of the human being and that of the animals develop differently. As for the animals, they are born with a fully developed brain, an example of a shark which automatically can swim after being born. For the human being, the brain is a development in progress that follows different stages. The human being is a work in progress since they learn by doing things and the actions assist in the wiring and development of the brain.
We also get to learn that, when the brain is not engaged, it does not develop and this is especially after the age of two years in children.
Tell what is explained or what ideas are espoused, as well as what special methods (if any) were used?
The process of becoming who you are begins at birth. The human brain starts in unfinished form and that is the reason that those babies were solely dependent on the adults, compared to mammals, that are born with the brain completely developed.
In the backing of the findings, the research is done on the human being, like the one carried out on children in orphanages and the study carried out on teenagers and adults.
What might a suitable, descriptive subtitle for the film/video be? What makes your suggested subtitle an appropriate one?
A suitable title for the video would have been “how the brain works”
The title would have been suitable because the video talks of different stages in the development of the brain, in different stages of someone’s life.
(2) A critique of the material.
What did you like in what you saw?
That the scientists base his arguments on scientific research which was carried out to bring about his message on how the brain functions. This means that the arguments in the video have documented evidence.
Why?
The video documents day to day occurrences that happen in society and we can all relate to them. Key principles behind the brain are well explained based on real-life and experiments.
What did you not like?
The video was well presented.
Why?
What concepts do you believe are especially important?
The process of becoming fully developed in human beings takes a long period, and that the brain does not stop making new connections when people develop into adulthood.
People behave and react differently to things with age. Also, the fact that illnesses in the brain like the brain tumor can change the behavior of a person.
Why?
People tend to behave differently depending on their age group.
Do you notice any problems in the reasoning?
No.
From the perspective of your own interests, what concepts are useful and good (or not)?
Some diseases and illnesses can change the behavior of a person, and for the brain to develop, it needs to be engaged in different activities.
(3) Relevance/Application.
How does the film/video fit into the course?
The study of the brain can help one to explain why people behave differently. We are made to understand some issues when it comes to behavior or underlying issues like learning disabilities in children. We also learn how the environment impacts the growth of the brain.
What implications or connections does it have to recent readings?
There are so many factors that lead to behavior change, and that, illness of the brain can alter or change how someone behaves.
If it were your film, what would you do differently?
Since the video is more of a documentary, for me, I would have chosen to make it more of a movie or a storyline where the characters would be made to play different parts. This would make it more interesting and captivating to the eye.
