2020 Dems warm to expanding Supreme Court
In the article “2020 Dems warm to expanding Supreme Court” by Burgess Everett and Marianne Levine, the authors look at the different perspectives of democratic leaders on reforms on the judicial system. The calls for the reforms seem to be linked to the changes by Republicans during the Obama era. The changes intended by the majority of the progressive leaders are the expansion of the judicial system and establishment of term limits. Although the reforms have been echoed by most of the leaders vying for the democratic ticket, the majority of Democratic senators also view it as a disruption of the essential branch of government.
In my opinion, the expansion of the judiciary by democratic leaders is not attached to essential ideology rather than the partisan competition. The changes in the system of the judiciary will increase the politicization of the judiciary rather than helping to make it a free and fair system. As expressed in the article through the interview with Warren, “It’s not just about expansion, it’s about depoliticizing the Supreme Court” (Everett and Levine). The changes in the structure of the judiciary as a response to the actions of republican leaders will only accelerate the politicizing of the system as compared to expanding it. From the article, it is evident that the struggle between judicial activism and judicial restraint is an issue of debate in the Senate caucus. The decision making of the judicial system is key to the stability for the nation thus, it cannot be approached from the partisan approach.
