Steps Involved in Modifying own Behaviour

“An old dog cannot be taught new tricks” is a common societal phrase used to mean that it’s difficult to modify or change the behaviour of an individual who is already set. However, this is not the case according to psychology since there are five steps towards the behaviour modification (Cherry, 2019). This paper will give an overview guide of the steps towards behavioural change.

Stage 1 is the pre contemplation stage, at this stage one does not recognise any problem in their behaviour and the individual is not even considering change in behaviour. Stage 2 is the contemplation stage, and in this case, the individual is now aware that there is need for change and he/she starts to weigh out the advantages and the disadvantages of changing the behaviour. This stage usually consumes a lot of time as mixed feelings arise about the potential change. Stage 3 is the preparation stage, where the individual starts to make smaller changes awaiting the big change. For a successful behavioural change, one should gather much information on the ways to change behaviour, prepare for statements that will motivate and state own goals. Look out for advice and encouragements from reliable sources. Stage 4 is taking action, this is in order to accomplish the set goals. It requires one to take action by rewarding ones success in every step taken and seeking out social support this will help maintain the positive steps. At most, times the behavioural change do not fall because of the failure to take action but due to the failure of adequate thoughts and time during previous steps. Stage 5 is the maintenance stage, which means that one has to avoid the former behaviours and keep up the new behaviour. During this stage, one should avoid temptations and remember to reward self when one has successfully been able to avoid a relapse.

Most people are seriously thinking about behavioural change and are in a position to contemplate the behaviour thought they fail to take action. Contemplation requires raising the consciousness and self-re-evaluation.
