Storyteller Report

The story of Yuki-Onna: the snow woman, involves a legendary woman in Japan that is believed to appear only during the snowy weather. Every time during stormy weather, she is expected to be out in it. Story tales describe how she hunted humans and freeze them to death. Other tales illustrate how she fell in love with a handsome man and later became a human wife until when the man betrayed her trust. David McKee in his tale the Snow Woman describes the story of Yuki-Onna and how she fell in love with a young handsome man.

The story being performed is “Snowwoman” story and the author is David McKee. The author is interactive and elaborative during storytelling to make sure that children understand every detail of the story. His language is engaged to children to foster the vocabulary. The author has focused on both dialogue and narrative aspects of his storytelling. For instance, “Be sure you take good care of them, for if they ever complain about you, I will keep my promise.” Dialogue is important because it involves children in the discussion. In dialogue reading, teachers and parents involve children in asking open questions and discuss content and word meaning.

The audience, which is children are keen and attentive during the session. They ask questions where they do not understand. Additionally, they use a demonstration using their body parts. For instance, one of the kids described the snowman as having a long nose by pointing at his nose and describing how long it can get. This kind of response from the children demonstrates that they are keeping up with the storyteller. Additionally, the author interrupts the story to explicitly teach some words that are involved in the story. This approach is used to support children’s vocabulary learning by providing them a piece of contextual information. Besides, it helps to draw the attention of children to certain words and they can ask questions in words not understood to facilitate the learning process.

The story is a traditional tale because it starts with a phrase Once upon a time in ‘” and also it takes the audience to a time where witches and magic were common in the society. Also, the plots are shorter and simple to understand. The presentation was effective since the author has used dialogue to make it more interactive for the audience. The use of dialogue has given the audience a chance to ask open questions and discuss more content from the narrative. Further, the approach of interrupting the story to explain the vocabulary used in the story makes it more of a learning process. To sum, the presentation was effective since it involved interaction between the audience and the storyteller.

This story fits into the lesson because it has emphasized on fantastic, which reflects on the imagination of children. This makes it entertaining because it engages the mind of kids. Also, imaginative stories ae not boring because children love something that completely takes away their attention. Additionally, the genre is repetitive to help children learn from certain expressions and words in the story. For instance, in this genre kids can learn from the evil of the snow woman. Therefore, the purpose of the children’s literature is to teach them and not just to entertain. For instance, the bad person in children’s literature always gets punished in the end to teach children that when they involve in bad things there are consequences at the end.

This story was chosen because it has some teaching for the audience. The children learn from the evils of the Snow woman who gets punished for her evil deeds and disappears at the end of the tale. Children can learn from this genre that when you involve yourself in bad things, there is always a punishment at the end. This can reflect on their character as they develop. They will learn to be children of good characters because of not wanting to be punished.
