High Schools versus Colleges

High school provides an opportunity to shape up students in readiness for the adult world. The students in high school prepare themselves adequately for awaiting various career fields offered in higher learning, one of them being colleges. But when it comes to the two, high schools and colleges, the question that strikes one’s head is whether there is a difference between high schools and colleges. First of all, both are learning institutions; however, the difference is put across by the participants in both entities. For the similarities, there is no much to reflect upon, but that does not rule out the fact that there are a few similarities that exist. Through the contrast between these two learning institutions in which the students face during the transition from one level to another, they get to understand a significant change in the person they were and the person they become after a transformation happens. Therefore, understanding this underlying comparison necessary.

Learning resources.

In high school, learning resources search as textbooks will be most of the time, small in size in terms of the content within them. On the other hand, college textbooks would be substantial because of the broad topic they would cover. Another difference would surface whereby high school textbooks and the majority of learning resources are provided within the school; in contrast, college textbooks are not provided in the institution, so one is required to buy for themselves. However, much difference in terms of the resources, the similarity comes in where both require the learning resources.

In college, the amount of work done by the learner is much higher. In college, one would spend most of the time on another outside-class task such as research, group work, and more, therefore increasing the amount of work done in college. In high school, on the other hand, the student has less work, and most of the work is given in class and ends there. Although the amount of task has a significant difference, both college and high school cannot do without learning activities, and this is where the similarity between the two comes in. In addition to this task, the students from both high school and college are evaluated using those tasks they undertake in class and in the college level outside class activities included.

The period one spends in class.

In high school, the students will tend to be fixed in one position, in that the teaching and learning activities would take place under one building. The students are only allowed outside the classroom with the specified time on the timetable. Although college, on the other hand, has a well-organized time allocation for various classes, the students are not fixed on one position and are free to move after classes are over. Time allocation, though forms differences between the two, it still forms another basis of similarities between the two.

Room for improvement.

In high school, one has a window of opportunity to improve his or her performance, given the structure of the teaching-learning activities search as a class assignment, homework, among others. In both high schools and colleges, there is examining of learners; however, in high school, an examination is continuously offered and covers a small amount of content; in colleges, on the other hand, testing is occasional and includes a large number of materials.
