I am Stephanie Salley, a guidance counselor at Potomac High School. I have interacted with Demoni Smith closely. As a professional guidance counselor, I interact with students who face various challenges intending to assist them in managing their situations. I observed that the Demon’s case was unique and required immediate action. The experience at her home was not suitable for a high school learner. Demon’s father is a drunkard and does not provide the necessary support to her daughter. Such domestic challenges have motivated Demoni to seek psychological and financial support.
The experience at home with her father’s friends caused Demoni to experience chronic stress. From her account, I learned that she feared to live at home due to men who visited her father to have a drink frequently. In most cases, such male drunkards would access Demoni’s home even in the absence of her father. The situation worsened because she could not find a suitable place to reside in the course of her studies. Without adequate support, chronic stress would lead to depression.
I provided financial assistance to Demoni to allow her to manage her situation. After she left her home, Demoni struggled to find a place to live. At first, she used to reside at friends’ places as a way to cope with the challenges at home. However, she decided to reside in hotels. It was during this time that Demoni sought my help. I used to lend her money to pay for hotel accommodation. Although living in a hotel provides a temporary solution, it is not the best place for a female student to reside.
