Christianity began in the 1st century in a town known as Judea in the Roman province, which originated from Jesus’ teachings. Its history all about the Christian religion. If you are a believer in Jesus’ teachings, his death and, resurrected then, you are Christian (History of Christianity, 2020). Evangelism didn’t grow overnight in the roman empire; it took time. In the early CE, during the fall of the western empire, the gospel was still spreading in Rome. As the gospel grew, it was highly influenced by the Roman political and cultural structures for a couple of centuries.
Meanwhile, as the gospel spread to different kinds of people, the Roman culture had to be adjusted since they encountered people with different cultures and believes (Khan Academy, 2020). As we look into the roman empire and her religion, we will structure down the benefit and the suffering of the believers under the realm, factors that facilitated growth, and those opposed it, her unity and division that came along with the gospel.
Initially, Christianity began as an undisclosed mission in the empire, where the apostles faced persecutions at worst and scorn at best; this was the era when Rome was falling. The emperor Constantine blamed the Christians and the Roman people for the fall and faced the consequences (Persecution of Christians, 2020). Further to that, he eradicated Christianity by getting ride of their leader. Afterward, he received a vision in the battle and made Christianity legal this aided the apostles to have enough time. Meantime, the worshiping was done openly, and, as a result, churches were built at a high rate, not only in Rome but in the whole empire. With the adoption of religion, some roman cultural were thrown away, which made the people live in harmony among themselves. Later on, the spread of the word made the empire less ruthless by changing the society’s cultural beliefs and traditions between the old pagan faith and the government. In conclusion, the beginning of the spread of the word was brutal, but later, it became easy to preach the gospel.
The social aspect contributed to a high percentage of Christianity growth. The Greek language’s stability in both west and east of the Mediterranean made the spread of the biblical word much more comfortable. Though the west land people communicate with the Latin language, the council had made the commerce language to be Greek. Hence it was a familiar language though not to all (Kenneth, 2006). Rome had a powerful army that could keep peace among themselves, and this gave the preacher a meek time to spread the word. Advanced technology in Rome allowed the county to have a standard road, making it much easier for the apostles to spread the word. Missionaries such as Paul, the apostle, were able to use the streets to spread the message and build churches all over the empire. In dead, peace, and technology-facilitated growth of Christianity, common language facilitated growth in only the Greek people and caused a communication barrier.
Apart from the unity, the gospel brought in a lot was harm too. In the beginning, the roman empire was a pagan dominated kingdom. Fortunately, Christianity grew at a high rate, and most people believed in the gospel. Later on, emperor Constantine saw a chance to unite his people and made the religion legal. Consequently, dispensary, along with schools developed, brought social and economic growth in society.
For this reason, pagan temples and holy places like the polytheists were destroyed. People were coerced to convert; otherwise, they were killed; this caused a division (Ivan, 2020). Later on, the Muslim religion emerged in northern Africa, Persian, middle east, and Egypt.weakened the roman empire since the partners had stopped trading. As a result, internal backbiting appeared,.addition to that; education was shaken in Rome because Egypt retained papyrus. Darkness consumed Europe (Verizon Media, 2020). Both unity and division were encountered as the gospel was spread.
In conclusion, Christianity is a religion with great values and virtues. In the start, apostles faced challenges because the empire’s resistance to the word and their consistency and disobedience made some to lose their life. Afterward, when the gospel was made legal, the word’s growth became more manageable, and factors such as social structure helped the apostles do the work better. People lost their culture, believes, and their way of life. Christianity came along with the division of religion. Protestants and Muslims all emerged after Christianity, gradually, religion division is seen even in society and in the way of life. Lastly, being a Christian is the best religion.
