Determining the Credibility of Evidence and Resources

Use of Evidence-Based Research to Cancer Treatment

Evidence-based research in nursing is the incorporation of evidence from peer-reviewed resources that are scientifically proven to provide the best evidence, patient values, clinician knowledge, and patient expertise to make the best decisions towards patient care (Stevens, 2013).   Nurses should use evidence-based research to treat cancer as it helps them make better decisions on better options for cancer treatment. One should choose the right resources towards the type of cancer that the patient is suffering. There are various types of cancer, including bladder cancer, cervical cancer, brain cancer, breast, and prostate cancer. Depending on the type of cancer, nurses should use the required standard of treatment, basing their arguments from evidence-based research. Putting evidence into cancer treatment research helps nurses examine their patients critically and synthesize the information towards better treatment and management.

Criteria for Determining the Credibility of Resources

There is a criterion that should be followed in determining the credibility of resources by nurses in cancer treatment. First, a nurse should perform a CRAAP test, which helps ensure the resource used is credible (Lewis, 2018). CRAAP means currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. Considering the five aspects will ensure that the source is credible. Before using a source, one should check the date it was published or last updated to ensure the information is current as information changes over time.  One should also check if the data matches the purpose (Lewis, 2018). For instance, a resource on breast cancer should only contain information on breast cancer in detail. One should also look at the author’s info to determine if they are qualified to publish it. Another critical aspect is checking if the information provided is accurate by checking if there are any errors. The last option involves checking the purpose of the resource and the intended audience. The resource should also maintain objectivity with no biasness.

Credibility and Relevance of Evidence and Resources in Cancer

Historical review of the causes of cancer published in 2016 is a credible source written by Clarke Brian Blackadar. This article is relevant in cancer as it helps a baccalaureate-prepared nurse to establish the root causes of disease. The article uses evidence from research carried out in early 1900 to determine the root causes of cancer, including exposure to sunlight, tobacco and alcohol use, obesity, bacteria, and fungi, among others (Blackadar, 2016). The author has also identified the viral causes of cancer.

The risk of covid 19 for patients with cancer was published by Hanping Wang and li Zhang in 2020. This article is a current resource that can be used by the nurses to provide the best of care to cancer patients. The article contains essential information on the risks of cancer patients associated with the coronavirus, the current global pandemic. The author used evidence to support his argument and emphasizes that nurses should ensure that patients with cancer be protected to prevent themselves from this pandemic as they are immunosuppressed (Wang & Zhang, 2020).

Significance of Incorporating Evidence into EBP Model in Cancer

There are many benefits of incorporating evidence-based resources and benefits in cancer. First, the nurse will always be updated on the new medical practices and protocols required to treat and manage cancer (Stevens, 2013).  Incorporating evidence into EBP in cancer increases the chances of recovery for the patients as the nurses use only the best methods. EPB has helped the nurses to include cancer patients in their care plan. Lastly, the use of EBP in cancer treatment allows nurses to identify the risks that are associated with specific treatment methods that they choose to use (Stevens, 2013).
