Impact of Ecotourism
Ecotourism refers to a responsible traveling to natural areas that preserves the environment, while sustaining the well –being of the indigenous people. Therefore, ecotourism has been described as a type of tourism with a low-impact on the environment. Since the establishment of ecotourism, many governments have encouraged ecotourism as a way of attracting foreign investments in the form of tourists. Costa Rica is one of the regions that have embraced this mode of tourism. With its extensive ecosystem and rich biodiversity, it has become one of the leaders in this form of tourism. By examining the ecotourism in Costa Rica, I believe its benefits to the environment outweighs its disadvantages.
The promotion of ecotourism in Costa Rican has numerous benefits to the environment. To start with, ecotourism has become of the major justifications for the conversation of natural regions throughout Costa Rica leading to a rapid expansion of the national park system. Additionally, ecotourism is an effective way to deal with the issue of widespread deforestation. Deforestation is a major issue in various countries including Costa Rica. However, with the introduction of ecotourism deforestation has significantly decreased. In its focus on promoting environmental sustainability, ecotourism has led to significant economic development both local and national levels. For instance, the gross national product of the country has grown significantly since its establishment. Additionally, ecotourism has been the major source of foreign exchange in the country. Additionally, the local communities have also been benefiting greatly from this type of ecotourism. The parks have led to several ecotourism –related activities in the neighboring communities such as the ATEC (Talamanca Ecotourism and Conservation Association). The organization was established by the indigenous people to service tourists by providing local guides, lodging, and food. To enhance eco-tourism, the activities should be largely directed to benefit the local communities by improving their quality of life.
