RE: introduction of Emma Lazarus program in St. Marys University
Emma Lazarus is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of the United States of America. Throughout her life, Emma Lazarus was in the limelight as an artist. For example, she is regarded as an American essayist and a poet best remembered for her sonnet “the new colossus.” She made a significant contribution to the American culture and the field of literature. Also, she contributed to various community-based programs, religion, women empowerment, and fought for equality in the United States. As a result, I would recommend that St. Marys University put on a program in the 2020-2021 school year to teach all students about Emma Lazarus.
Notably, Emma Lazarus is an essential figure for students to know about. The contemporary world is regarded as a diverse world with people from different cultures, backgrounds, and religions. In these lenses, Emma Lazarus is a cornerstone of diversity and inclusion in the United States. Importantly, diversity is a critical cultural element in St. Marys University. As an international school, it holds students of different nationalities, religions, and cultural backgrounds. As a result, introducing Emma Lazarus in the University would be effective in encouraging the school’s concept of diversity. For example, the begging of violent anti-Semitism made a turning point for Emma Lazarus’s life. In this case, she represented the Jewish community, which was a refugee in the country. She was the person behind the creation of a Jewish homeland. Also, for students at the University to understand the American culture, they have to learn about Emma Lazarus. One cannot exhaust the American culture without mentioning the statue of liberty. Emma Lazarus played a significant role in the creation of the statue of liberty. In her New Colossus poem, she regards the statue of liberty as the “mother of exiles.” This is a symbol of opportunity and immigration.
Primarily, considering the information above, the aspects of Lazarus’s life that should be highlighted include literature, contributions to the American culture, and religion. In this case, if Emma Lazarus’s program is to be introduced in the University, the departments involved in studying her impact on American life are as follows. Firstly, the Department of Education, Humanities & Social Sciences (EHSS) which includes history, culture, international development, art, sociology, and political economy. Emma Lazarus can be regarded as a social figure that made a considerable impact on the American communities. Moreover, her legacy in poetry can be effective in art and literature classes at St. Marys University. Secondly, the department of Theology can be used to dispense knowledge about Emma Lazarus in the University. Chiefly, Lazarus made a significant impact on religious studies. For example, in The New Colossus poem aligns with various biblical values and teachings. She borrowed from biblical teaching to assert and affirm the rights of immigrants. I think the best method to study this program would be panel discussions where students discuss the impact of Emma Lazarus’s life. Overall, considering her influence in the American culture, the Emma Lazarus program should be introduced at St. Marys University.
