Leadership competencies are the skills that contribute to the superior performance of a given leader. Companies can help identify and develop future leaders by adopting an approach to leadership based on expertise. Business’s future trends and strategies are required to drive the development of new leadership skills. Although some leadership skills are vital for every company, an organization should define leadership attributes that are distinctive to a given firm for the generation of competitive merit. The managers and the top-level leaders have a concern about the development of the leadership skills that they require to become more effective leaders. This paper discusses various ways of developing your leadership competency.
There are five leadership practices that a leader should develop to better his performance as a leader (Kouzes et al., 2007). They include modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, encouraging the heart, enabling others to act, and challenging the process. Modeling the way is an essential competency you should have as a leader. You should set the example by working in ways that echo the shared values. For people to identify you as a good leader, you must achieve small victories that develop commitment, confidence, and steady progress. Making these small goals helps in building momentum.
Enabling others to act is another critical skill a good leader requires to develop. You should develop a spirit of trust and association by encouraging cooperative goals in your workplace. A good leader should know that mutual respect sustains excellent efforts. Good leaders should strengthen other employees, making them feel powerful and able to achieve the goals set in the company. Motivating the workers helps to improve the performance of the company hence achieving the objectives of the organization.
Challenging the process is a crucial competency you should have as a good leader. Good leaders must look for opportunities to transform the status quo by employing new ideas in the organization. They take risks and experiment by seeking innovative ways to advance the organization. A leader should set short-term goals that people can easily achieve as the work towards a more significant objective. An effective leader loosens officialdom when it impedes an action. Leaders admit occasional dissatisfactions as opportunities to study, for they understand that risking involves failures and mistakes.
Inspiring a shared vision is another vital skill one should have as an effective leader. You should passionately believe that you can bring a change in an organization. You need to envision the future and form a unique image of what the company can become. Through the leader’s persuasion and magnetism, they register other workers in their dreams. The leaders ought to make their visions real and enable others to see thrilling potentials for the future. Encouraging the heart is the last essential quality you should have as an effective leader of an organization. It is not an easy task to achieve the broad goals of an organization, so for the leader to have hope and determination alive, they must appreciate other worker’s contributions towards achieving the company’s objectives. Members of any winning team enjoy sharing in the rewards of their hard work. Sharing loots makes employees feel like heroes.
In conclusion, an effective leader should be a good role model for the other employees of an organization. For you to be an effective leader, you need to learn how to encourage teamwork in your workplace because this encourages the excellent performance of the workers hence attaining the organization’s goals. You ought to set short-term goals that you can easily accomplish as you look forward to achieving complex goals. For people to identify you as a good leader, you must be capable of creating an image of how the company will be in the future and work on it. Since it is hard to attain the goals of an organization, you must learn to appreciate other worker’s contribution to achieving the objectives of the organization.
