Vianne and her husband Antoine are in a romantic relationship, and they portray a lot of love. Antoine takes care of Vainne when her mother dies, and she suffers a miscarriage. When Antoine gets recruited to war, the couple reunites after the war and raises their son. Isabelle and Gaetan also share romantic love. The two are immediately attracted to one another, and they fight by each other during the war. Family love exists between Isabelle and her father, Jullien. When Isabelle gets captured, the authorities suspect her to be the Nightingale, but they doubt their allegations since Isabelle is a woman. When Jullien hears that his daughter is in danger, he surrenders, claiming to be the Nightingale to save his daughter. Love between friends exists between Vianne and Rachel. Vianne hides Rachel to protect her from the Nazis, and when Rachel is discovered, Vianne adopts the son of Rachel. Vianne adopts Ari to protect him from the Germans because of the friendship that exists between her and Rachel.
The power of women is a new lesson a reader can grasp in the Nightingale. The story of the two sisters proves that women can break barriers and perform beyond societal expectations. Typically during the war, women are expected to remain at home and wait for their husbands and take care of children. However, Isabelle takes part in the war by hiding and transporting soldiers. The courageous actions of Isabella rescue many people and portray the courage of women. Vianne also displays courage by hiding and rescuing Jewish children. Jewish people are being transported to concentration camps. Vianne starts by Adopting Ari, and changing his name, then proceeds to hide children and taking them to the orphanage. The actions of Isabelle and Vianne prove that women are courageous, and their efforts can make a difference.
The result of war and destruction is a timeless truth developed in the story. As mentioned earlier, the novel is set in World War II. Millions of Jews were killed during the holocaust. In addition to the Jews, many soldiers lost their lives. Families are separated from their loved ones as jews are taken to concentration camps, and men get recruited to the war. Antoine leaves his family without protection, and Vianne gets raped by a Nazi during the war. Rachel gets separated from her family, and her daughter gets shot as they try to escape. Eventually, as the war ends, it is clear that neither side wins the war. Instead, both sides suffer death, destruction, and loss. Furthermore, the economies of the country at war declines as all parties are stagnated in war.
