Utilitarian ethics
Utilitarian ethics is perhaps the best ethical theory compared to the other two leading ethical theories of virtue ethics and deontological ethical. Predominantly, utilitarian ethics forms the underlying basis for normative conversations. Accordingly, utilitarian ethics is the most important consequentialist approach because it entails the determination of right and wrong by purely focusing on outcomes. As such, utilitarianism ethics presume that the most ethical choice in a situation is the one with the greatest good for the greatest number.
Accordingly, the utilitarianism approach to ethics is considered important following several reasons. Foremost utilitarian proponents advocate that this approach greatly endorses morality. As such, they hold that utilitarianism endorses morality whose purpose is to make human living better through increasing the number of things deemed humanly good such as happiness and pleasure. In so doing, morality also plays a crucial role in reducing the number of things perceived as bad such as unhappiness and pain, therefore making the world a better place for the many.
Secondly, utilitarian ethics offers a suitable mechanism for addressing ethical dilemma. Often, competing ethical claims present challenges in decision making. Utilitarianism thus presents a definite approach for evaluating such competing ethical claims and making the right ethical decisions when faced with moral dilemmas. To this end, the ethical approach makes a trade-off between the ethical outcomes of a decision. If it presents good to the greatest number, then the option is ethical. Relatively, if the outcomes of a decision present more harm than good, then the decision is unethical and it is often traded in for the good option.
Lastly, utilitarianism promote the development of empathy for the suffering of others, which greatly fosters humanity and peace. Primarily, in a world characterized by unending strife and suffering, utilitarian ethics call for empathy towards the suffering of others and in so doing promoting humanitarian consideration for others, which in turn promotes humanity and peace.
