Metacognitive strategies are known to be methods used to assist learners in understanding the way they learn. It also refers to the processes designed for students to “think” about their “thinking.” Metacognitive is one of the core objectives of science education teachers. Recently some scholars have come to prove that some pedagogical approach models used by teachers have become quite prominent in student’s development towards metacognitive awareness. Some researchers have also stated that metacognitive usually plays a central role in learning and achievement.

It has been knotted that most teachers who apply metacognitive strategies can positively impact students who have learning disabilities by helping them to develop a different plan for learning information. The students can later use this information to memorize and eventually use to benefit their studies. As the learners become aware of how to learn, they tend to apply these processes efficiently as they acquire new information and become more independent thinkers.

Think Aloud.

This metacognitive strategy has been knotted to be great for reading comprehension and problem solving (high-quality practice in reading and language arts). This strategy usually helps students monitor and reflect upon what they are learning consciously. It is one of the strategies that always work so well when teachers read a story or solve problems out loud and periodically stop to verbalize their thoughts. This gives the students a chance to follow the teacher’s thinking process giving them a transparent foundation to try and create their strategies and processes that are useful for understanding what the students are trying to comprehend.

This strategy is quite significant for word problems. It is always a tool that assists students in a good decision-making process since they usually serve an aid for planning and self-evaluation. Typically it gives the students to ask what they know and the need to know to arrive at an answer and the emphasis needed when rereading the problem and self-checking responses.

Reading comprehension.

This is one stage that usually involves students actively engaging with a text and accurately deciphering the layers of meaning. It is a strategy where the student is expected to develop solid reading comprehension skills. Statistically, people who have low reading comprehension abilities suffer in academic, professional, and personal pursuits. The resources under this strategy are useful in promoting reading comprehension.

In summary, as students become more skilled when applying these strategies, they usually gain confidence and become more strategic, more independent as learners. Independence led to ownership as the learners start to pursue their own intellectual needs and discover the new world of information at their fingertips.
