Teaching Children Math
Math in kindergarten is all about learning essentials or basic math skills and concepts. At this level, students learn how to count, tally, and recognize numbers up to ten. They also learn simple addition and subtraction concepts, as well as creating patterns. Learning these skills is essential for the children as it improves their reasoning and thinking abilities as they grow. It also lays a good foundation for them to achieve better performance in math when they transit to elementary school level and beyond. However, effective teaching of math to kindergarten children requires the use of appropriate teaching approaches to facilitate a better understanding of the concepts. A better approach for teaching children is the one that motivates and encourages them to learn the desired or intended concept. The teaching approaches should involve the use of real-life objects, examples or stories, and other physical things that the children are familiar with to enable them to relate and connect math with the real world. Therefore, as a kindergarten math instructor, your everyday lesson plan should incorporate these essential elements. For instance, when teaching about numbers, teachers may consider using pictures and representation to allow children to link or build a relationship between numbers and the represented object. Teachers should also employ the questioning approach by posing questions to the children to enable them reason and develop their thinking, hence leading to a better understanding of the concepts being introduced to them. The long-term goal for teaching math to children is to equip them with essential math skills and concepts that could be applied in real-life scenarios and also help them to perform well in their next levels of education.
