I chose a report written by Brookings experts on how to assist policymakers in protecting and saving livelihoods in the current COVID-19 crisis. The report, Reopening the World: How to Save Lives and Livelihoods is a nonfiction piece of work based on real-life and real-world experiences taking place currently around the world. The reports talks of the unexpected and sudden changes that have happened around the world and its severe impacts on the education sector around the world. According to the report, for the first time in history, almost all schools across the world were closed, leaving learners without any formal learning. The report focuses on the effect of Covid-19 on school closure and its relation to the socio-economic status around the world. Most countries lack the systems and the capacity to provide quality education remotely thus creating a learning gap between the rich and the poor. “Throughout the world, the impact of school closures on student learning will vary by socioeconomic status and the extent to which school and school systems can provide quality education remotely” (p. 3). The report raises the questions of whether the closure of most countries and schools will have bigger effects on poor countries that the rich countries. Also, it questions the educational disparities between high and low-income regions within the same country. The report does not present any contradicting information. The report proposes that the only option left for policymakers as they strategize to reopen schools is to learn from other countries’ experiences that have already reopened. It offers a case study of Denmark and Finland.
