Push and Pull Factors that Led to the Settlement of the European Settlement of the North American Colonies
Introduction
Many reasons explain European settlement in the North America colonies. Pull factors pushed the Europeans out of their places migrated to other lands. Pull factors, on the other hand, attracted the emigrants in the new places. The study in this paper has identified and elaborated some of the critical factors that led to European settlement in North America. The main aspect that has been outlined include religious factors, the social factors, Economic as well as political issues. Some of them are categorized as push factors while others are pull factors for European Settlement in North American Colonies.
Push Factors
Religious aspects. This is the first factors that necessitated immigration in North America. Religion is ideally practices and the beliefs that involve the worship of God. There were several protestant groups in Europe including the Puritans and the Pilgrims. Most of them migrated from their land to Northern America to establish their communities (Genger, 2018). Through this, they sought to worship God in their way. Years later, several groups followed them in America. Some of them include the Jews, the Catholics and Quakers. All these groups escaped from their places in search of freedom of worship which was not there in Europe.
Economic and social reasons encouraged emigration. There was a lot of hardship in Europe. The North America colonies faced challenges in their original motherland of Europe. Things were no better in Britain, Ireland, German as well in Scotland. Necessity made them free from their land to reduce suffering that is inclined with absolute poverty in Europe then. The other remarkable social aspects in Europe at this particular period of history is famine and diseases (White, 2018). Majority of the residents were tremendously challenged thus they ultimately made up their minds and moved in America. Besides, there was political turmoil in Europe and most of them opted that, it was even a better opportunity to serve as slaves in other lands. Ideally, this motivated their migration in North American Colonies.
Pull Factors
Several factors are categorized as pull factors for European Settlement in North American Colonies. The first one is the hunger for gold and silver. The first colonists particularly Spain believed that Gold and silver were abundant in America. Thus among the earlier adventures in America came in search of the most precious metals. They believed that if they went to America, they will access these assets and thus they crossed the Mediterranean Sea to North America Colonies (Hatch, 2016). The other remarkable factors that led to European Settlement in the North America colonies are land hunger. In Colonial settlement, several opportunities favoured the merchants. Some proprietors owned most of the Carolinas in America. They inspired most of the European Settlers to settle in North America Colonies. In some European countries such as in Britain and Ireland, the tenants owned small portions of lands (Yusuf, 2017). They paid a lot of rent on the land and now there was free land in America. When the Europeans settled in America, they were able to access the land freely. Later settlers in America were able to purchase the land at a low cost.
Finally, the last factor that inspired European settlement in the North America Colonies. For instance, the British Monarchs believed strongly that developing colonies was a form of wealth creation. Also, they argued that it was a source of power to expand colonies. The British Monarchs thus granted charters to various businessmen. For instance, the Virginia Company offered the colonists the opportunity to settle in Northern America. They referred to America as the New World. In 1607, they were unable to establish a colony in the Island of Roanoke (Ramos & Suriñach, 2017). Later they established the London Company. Virginia which was also regarded as the Jamestown was made purposely to make money. As the colonies increased, they gained power because they became economically powerful. Other colonies were established after the settlement. For instance, Massachusetts was the second colony among the 13 colonies and it was established in 1920.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the study has outlined the remarkable factors that necessitated the European Settlement in North America Colonies. For instance, Religion is brought as a pull aspect. This is because of the lack of freedom of worship in Europe. Several groups left their land in search of a land of liberty where they could worship God as they desired. The other groups were merchants some who wanted to own big lands perhaps for plantation farming. Others needed the most precious metals such as gold and silver which were readily available in Europe. The earlier colonies in North America were established at the beginning of the 16th Century as outlined in the study.
