Interventions of a Crisis

The crisis population I have selected comprises children who have experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse continuously. Children that undergo any form of abuse consistently require emergency services as their situation can be termed as a crisis. Frequent exposure to abuse may affect the child’s mental health, leading to behavioural and emotional problems such as engaging in fights and substance dependency. One of the events that enabled the creation of better intervention for crisis is Mary Richmond writing about direct practice principles, which enabled social work to develop, leading to solving crises among clients (Laureate Education, 2012). Several changes have occurred in the intervention of crisis leading to the enhancement of social services effectiveness.

Ways that Crisis Intervention has Transformed

The first way that crisis interventions have changed is through the incorporation of empathy. Incorporating empathy in crisis interventions has changed social work as it enables the client and the clinician to develop a sound therapeutic relationship. As a result, children experiencing crisis open more about deeper issues affecting them, enabling faster recoveries and progress. Integrating empathy in crisis intervention among children has also enabled clinicians to be more connected with children, enabling them to understand their needs (France, 2015) easily. The change occurs because clinicians show children that they care, encouraging them to be receptive to the interventions. The other change that has occurred in crisis interventions is the introduction of online crisis interventions. Online crisis intervention has been developed to help individuals experiencing a crisis cope with the stress and avoid harming themselves or others remotely, concurring geographical barriers.

Examples Past and Current Crisis Interventions

An example of traditional crisis intervention is face-to-face therapy. A therapy session may help a child experiencing a crisis to calm down, avoiding self-harm (France, 2015). An example of current crisis intervention is online-based crisis intervention, whereby the therapeutic session occurs over an online platform.
