Counseling job
One of the previous jobs that I have ever held which I found not motivating is that of a counselor. In this position, I was expected to take the guardian role where I was expected to advise my clients on the problems that they were facing. In this case, I had to engage in brainstorming on the possible alternatives that may fit the varying needs of my clients. At some point, I was forced to look for some solutions online on issues that I thought were beyond me. The counseling job was not so motivating to me as it did not allow me to socialize with my peers. This role confined me to a lone ranger.
Moreover, there were some various job characteristics that were missing in this position. One of these characteristics is that there was no autonomy (Louis, 2016). In this case, I, as the employee had no freedom at all. For instance, I was not able to schedule the work according to the way I wanted. All I did was follow a predetermined program. This also made the job not to be motivating and made it boring since following a set program is not so much enjoyable a thing. To make this job more motivating, the management should provide for flexibility in that one should plan for himself how he or she wants the job done. Giving the employees the autonomy to do whatever they want will help in improving their morale to work, thus making the job motivating.
