Case Study Effects of Trauma on Families
Please read the following articles to prepare you in the completion of this case study assignment:
- When Emotional Trauma is a Family Affair (2014, by David Sack M.D., 2 pages)
- Trauma and Families: Fact Sheet for Providers from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network
- James, K., & MacKinnin, L. (2012). Integrating a trauma lens into a family therapy framework: Ten principles for family therapists. The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Family Therapy, 33(3), 189-209.
Now, I want you to imagine that you are a family therapist and are working with someone who has suddenly lost a sibling. Review the video entitled A Family Disrupted: Dealing with the Death of a Sibling (22 minutes in length) which shows three different individuals who have lost a sibling due to a traumatic event. Based on these narratives, apply concepts you would use to treat this individual.
Be sure to address the following:
- What do you think are the underlying issues and what model do you think would work best?
- How does what you’ve read about trauma apply?
- Examine the family dynamics, and discuss strategies that you think will assist this individual with the sudden loss of a loved family member.
- In addition, address how you would handle behaviors and ideas surrounding the grief they share with you.
Your paper should be 2-4 pages and must include references to the readings in our textbook up to this point in the course (the chapters assigned in the modules) and at least one other scholarly source (for example, a relevant article in a journal on Social Work or Family Therapy). You may use one of the articles provided in this module. Please cite using APA style.
