Social life nowadays is very abroad and complicated
INTRODUCTION
- Background of the Study
Social life nowadays is very abroad and complicated that influences human behavior. Each person has a way of expressing themself based on their personality. Their personality are different one another and it can be unique. Based on C. George Boeree, he said that “These theories often spend considerable attention on things like types and traits and tests with which we can categorize or compare people: Some people are neurotic, others are not; some people are introverted, other more extroverted; and so on.” (Boeree, 2006 : 6). From this statement, it can explains that with diverse personalities, it will harmonize the social life. Furthermore, each person personality is important to applied in social and be a good person. Because if their personality was being rude, it will cause the serious problem and can make a conflict.
If the personality has the problem, people automatically will do their defence mechanism. People probably using their defence mechanism to cover their ego from anxiety. As Lois Tyson stated that “Defenses are the process by which the contents of our unconscious are kept in the unconscious. In other words, they are processes by which we keep the repressed, repressed in other to avoid knowing what we feel we can’t handle knowing.” (Tyson, 1999 : 17-18).
Based on Anna Freud in her book entitled “The Ego and The Mechanism of Defence” (1936), she wrote a statement based on Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalytic theory who put forward about defence mechanism, she said:
It occurs for the first time in 1894, in Freud’s study “The Neuro-Psychoses of Defence,” and is employed in this and several of his subsequent works (“The Aetiology of Hysteria,” “Further Remarks on the Neuro-Psychoses of Defence”) to describe the ego’s struggle against painful or unendurable ideas or affect. (Freud, A, 1936 : 42).
Defence mechanism appeared when people has anxiety in social. The defence mechanism of each person certainly different with others. Defence mechanism had more kinds. Thus, each person has several kinds of defence mechanism which based on the problem. As Phebe Cramer said that “Ofcourse, one person does not use all of the defenses, and not all defenses are used by all people” (Cramer, 2009 : 1). One of the effect of defence mechanism is people will angry, wants to do a rebellion and desire to do a vengeance. People who can not hide their feelings towards what they do not like over the others making them do the bad deed. It have many reasons, such as descrimination, injustice, etc. People who had bad experiences the bad things will get oppressed. He is likely never forget the person and the incident that makes they feel oppressed. He will try to give punishment which is equal or even more painful toward the oppressor. This phenomena can be called as vengeance. He seeks vengeance for the thing that makes him suffer. For him, seeking vengeance is a kind of punishment that the oppresor must get. What the oppresor did to him, they could paying back. He could not realize that what he was doing was wrong. He believe that he was do right. For him, take a vengeance is a one of the best way to conveys his worst experience and suffering as a victim to his oppressor. The suffering of the victim becomes an evidence and make the oppressor can feel the same affliction of the victim had. As Mario Gollwitzer stated is:
However, the goal of revenge is fulfilled if the offender understood why revenge was taken on him. More precisely, the offender has to signal that he realizes that the penalty is visited on him because he behaved unjustly and in virtue of the wrongness of his unjust behavior. (Nozick in Gollwitzer, 2012 : 11).
A literary work creates its own world which is have the atmosphere that found in real world. It is related to the psychology as human behavior. As Suwardi Endaswara stated that the literary research has an important function in various aspects in human life. (Tuloli in Endraswara, 2013:10). The fact that the author of literary work give their imagination into it. The struggle, truth, sadness, happiness, etc as human experiences. There are genres in literary works, such as poetry, drama, and prose.
The thesis writer uses movie which is also a kind of drama for this thesis because drama give more detail in describing the atmosphere, the setting of the place, the setting of time and help the thesis writer to analyze the topic for this thesis. In the literary work review, vengeance is a main topic to discuss about the resistance from the oppressed class based on V for Vendetta’s movie script. The movie genre is a dystopian political thriller directed by James McTeigue, written by Wachowskis, and produced by Joel Silver, Grant Hill, and The Wachowskis. This movie is based on 1998 DC/Vertigo Comics limited series with the same tittle by David Llyod and Alan Moore. This movie is starred by Clive Ashborn, Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea, and John Hurt.
This movie was released by Warner Bros. Production on March 17, 2006, even caused various controversies among the people who watched it at the time because the film was considered as such counter to the government. But this film received good response among the opressed where the movie is very prominent about the resistance of the oppressed against the government. This movie also had awards and nominees among the controversies. Like, San Diego Film Critics Society Award for Best Production Design in 2006; Brothers Manaki International Film Festival for Special Award in 2006; Golden Trailer Awards for Best Action in 2006; SFX Award for Best Actress in 2007; Prometheus Special Award in 2007; Saturn Award for Best Actress, Best Science Fiction Film, Best Writing in 2007; Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for Best Script in 2008; and many more.
The reason why the thesis writer chose this movie is to be investigated the topic and the theme to be discussed, namely vengeance. Vengeance is depicted too in literary works in a film entitled V for Vendetta. This movie tells about a struggle of man, whose name is V. V did the vengeance to the government. He changed into a mysterious man and appeared as a terrorist. He used Guy Fawkes’ mask with long straight black hair, and wear all-black outfits. He is an actually one of the oppressed as a victim from the incident in the past. He appeared to take a revenge to the government.
Thus, he tried to avenge the other victims to sound the right to life of a person regardless of the status of the person himself. The incident was caused by the government in the past. At that time, the law of the government was so cruel. They does not want a minority citizens on their country. They were kidnapped and killed every citizen who was considered enemy of the government such as immigrants, Muslims, sex offenders, and terrorist. And the government want to create an new invention by using the victims as their ‘guinea pig’.
The thesis writer concerns about the main character shows action of the vengeance as oppressed people. The ways that the main character against for the other oppressed people can represent the human beings in life.
- Statement of the Problem
Based on the tittle and background of the study, the statements of the problems in this thesis is:
- Why did V do his vengeance against the government depicted in V for Vendetta’s movie script?
- Objective of the Study
The objective of the study is:
- To find out why V did his vengeance against the government depicted in V for Vendetta’s movie script.
- Significance of the Study
The thesis writer expects that this thesis gives the reader significance of the study both theoretically and practically.
- Theoretically
The thesis writer expect this thesis is useful for the student of English Literature Program and this thesis is useful especially for analysis the topic of vengeance in literary works.
- Practically
The thesis writer expected that this thesis will give a comprehension of vengeance in society or in literary works.
- Limitation of the Study
In this thesis, the thesis writer wants to focuse on analyzing the main character’s vengeance which is depicted in V for Vendetta’s movie script which is used (teori).
- Key to Specific Terms
- Vengeance: Vengeance can also be said as revenge. Revenge is a personal response to unjust treatment. Its goal to achieve some sort of payback, to get even with the villain, to make the offender get what he or she deserves. (Gollwitzer, 2012 : 3)
- V for Vendetta: The movie genre is a dystopian political thriller directed by James McTeigue, written by Wachowskis, and produced by Joel Silver, Grant Hill, and The Wachowskis. This movie is based on 1998 DC/Vertigo Comics limited series with the same tittle by David Llyod and Alan Moore.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter presents the related literature and studies. This thesis uses psychoanalysis theory as the approach to analyze the personality of the main character named V in V for Vendetta’s movie script. This will also review literature related to the studies: previous sostudy and theoretical nambackground, included psychoanalysis theory, system of personality, anxiety, defence mechanism, and vengeance.
- Previous Study
In order to deepen this study, the thesis writer takes several previous studies that have relevance points to get some further points. There are three previous studies that have similarities with the writer’s thesis. The thesis writer using the theory of anxiety, defence mechanism, denial, deppression, and vengeance in literary work.
The first previous study about defence mechanism was researched by Prasetyo (2008), the student of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, entitled Defence Mechanism of Captain Ahab in John Huston’s Moby Dick Movie: A Psychoanalitic Approach. The result is Prasetyo using Sigmund Freud as the theory of his thesis as a representation about the defence mechanism of the main character’s struggle based on his love and affection to the sea using individual psychological approach on the movie. He described the full aspect of the main character’s defence mechanism. He revealed that the main character had nine kinds of defence mechanism. Not only discuss about defence mechanism, he also discuss about system of personality, main character’s anxiety on the movie and structural analysis of the movie. The result is, he found that the main character had two dominant defence mechanism, they are: repression and razionalization and the dominant personality of main character was his id.
The second previous study was researched by Kristoforus Handrianus Sanam (2011), the student of Sanata Dharma University of Yogyakarta, entitled The Motivation in Commiting Revenge as Revealed in Dantes’ Three Characters Seen in Alexander Dumas’ The Count of Monte Christo. In his thesis, he focused on the character, Edmond Dante, and finding how the Dante’s motivation to commit revenge. He used the theory of character and characterization, theory of motivation, theory of revenge and punishment, and theory of justice. In his thesis conclusion, he describes about how the main character evolve after he being accusation, how the main character disguised himself into three another character and what the motivation of the main character is to find justice, and the results are he wants is the truth of his guiltless, he wants his enemies confess their faults and make a punishment over his enemies.
The last previous study was researched by Rizal Mahfudin (2014), the student of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, entitled The Necessity of Vengeance Reflected in Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Christo (1844): A Psychoanalytic Criticism. He used same object with Sanam, the same novel but he and Sanam had difference topic. According to his thesis, he used the theory of psychoanalysis, structure of personality (the id, ego, and superego), aggression, and vengeance. In his thesis, he focused on how the main character’s necessity of vengeance in the novel and analyzing the novel based on psychoanalytic criticism. He described that the main character on the novel had vengeance desire and to give punishment into his enemies in order to make them aware in their mistake. And Mahfudin wants to deliver the idea of vengeance that “Vengeance arises due to unwillingness of the victim upon the suffering and inappropriate behavior conducted by offender.” (2014 : 91). Beside he discuss about the psychoanalytic criticism, he also discuss about the structural elements of the fiction to support his thesis.
- Theoretical Background
- Psychoanalysis
The thesis writer uses psychoanalsis theory of Sigmund Freud to describe the main character’s defence of V for Vendetta’s movie script. According to Erik Rucks in his journal, he said that “Sigmund Freud was the man that founded psychoanalysis as the theory of personality that stresses the influence of unconscious mental process, the importance of sexual instincts, and the effects of early childhood.” (Hockenbury and Hockenbury in Rucks : 2).
Like Duane P. Schultz statement, she said that “Freud’s influence has been so profound that more than a century after his theory was proposed it remains the framework for the study of personality, despite its controversial nature.” (Schultz, 2008 : 48). Based on the explanation above, Lois Tyson stated about the goal of psychoanalysis is to help us to resolve our psychological problems, often called disorders or dysfunction. (Tyson, 1999 : 14).
- Human Personality
According to Freud, he divided three aspect of personality, they are have each function, those are: the id, the ego, and the superego. (Hall and Lindsay in Mubarok, 2019 : 14).
- System of Personality
Before going to the defence mechanism, it will discuss about system of personality. Each person definetely has their system of personality. According to Howard S. Friedman, he stated “All personality theories agree that human beings, like other animals, are born with a set of instincts and motivations.” (Friedman, 2016 : 47). Sigmund Freud categorize the system of personality into three construct: the id, the ego, and the superego. As Robert B. Ewen states that “Freud emphasizes that the id, ego, and superego are not separate compartments within the minds. They blend together, like sections of telescope or colors in a painting. For purposes of discussion, however, it is necessary to treat these interrelated construct one at a time.” (Ewen, 2010 : 17).
- Id
The id is in part of the conscious. The id is the component of system personality that it gives at birth. According to Howard S. Friedman, he stated “At birth, the inner motivating forces have obviously not yet been shaped by the external world. They are basic and unsocialized. Freud referred to this undifferentiated core of personality using a term that is translated as id.” (Friedman, 2016 : 47).
According to Jess Feist, his statement about id based on Freud is “However, the id is not immoral, merely amoral. All of the id’s energy is spent for one purpose—to seek pleasure without regard for what is proper or just.” (Freud in Feist, 2008 : 34). As Ewen states that “The id is totally illogical and amoral, however, and has no conception of reality or self-preservation. Its only resource is to form mental images of what it wants, a process called wish-fullfillment.” (Ewen, 2010 : 17).
Freud also stated how id related with personality, he said that “However, the id is not immoral, merely amoral. All of the id’s energy is spent for one purpose—to seek pleasure without regard for what is proper or just.” (Freud in Feist, 2008 : 34).
In review, the id is primitive, chaotic, inaccessible to consciousness, unchangeable, amoral, illogical, unorganized, and filled with energy received from basic drives and discharged for the satisfaction of the pleasure principle. (Feist, 2008 : 34).
- Ego
The ego is a construct of system of personality that in between id and superego. The ego works for decision-making of each person, the ego can be said that the executor of personality. The ego works on the reality. The ego, or I, is the only region of the mind in contact with reality. It grows out of the id during infancy and becomes a person’s sole source of communication with the external world. (Feist, 2008 : 35). The ego is the only component of personality that can intract with the environment. It is logical and rational, and forms realistic plans of action designed to satisfy the needs of the id. (Ewen, 2010 : 18).
According to Feist, Freud said that:
The ego becomes differentiated from the id when infants learn to distinguish themselves from the outer world. While the id remains unchanged, the ego continues to develop strategies for handling the id’s unrealistic and unrelenting demands for pleasure. (Freud in Feist, 2008 : 35).
The ego operates according to the reality principle; it must solve real problems. (Friedman, 2016 : 48). According to Freud, the ego is the part that rationalizes and regulates thoughts and behaviors involved mostly with the external world. The reality principle drives the ego by stating that gratification should be postponed until the appropriate time (Freud in Rucks : 3).
- Superego
The superego is a construct of system of personality that in the last. The superego is in part of subconscious and conscious of human. Superego works based on morality principle. As Freud stated that:
However, the superego differs from the ego in one important respect—it has no contact with the outside world and therefore is unrealistic in its demands for perfection. It cannot produce repressions by itself, but it can order the ego to do so. The superego watches closely over the ego, judging its actions and intentions. (Freud in Feist, 2008 : 36).
Sociological aspect of personality is superego. Superego represents of society’s norm. According to Friedman, She said that “The personality structure that emerges to internalize these societal rules is termed the superego. The superego is similar to a conscience, but goes further. We can think about what our conscience, our internal set of ethical guidelines, is telling us to do, but parts of the superego are unconscious.” (Friedman, 2016 : 48).
- Anxiety
Anxiety arised from human’s system of personality. Based on Duane P. Schultz book, she said about Freud’s anxiety statement, “Freud made anxiety an important part of his personality theory, asserting that it is fundamental to the development of neurotic and psychotic behavior. He suggested that the prototype of all anxiety is the birth trauma” (Schultz, 2008 : 59).
According to Feist in his book, he stated that “In defining anxiety, Freud (1933/1964) emphasized that it is a felt, affective, unpleasant state accompanied by a physical sensation that warns the person against impending danger. The unpleasantness is often vague and hard to pinpoint, but the anxiety itself is always felt.” (Freud in Feist, 2008 : 39). Schultz also said that if person can not faced their anxiety and they are in danger of being overwhelmed, the anxiety can be said traumatic. (Schultz, 2008 : 60).
Like C. George Boeree’s statement about anxiety, he said that “When these make conflicting demands upon the poor ego, it is understandable if it – if you – feel threatened, fell overwhelmed, feel as if it were about to collapse under the weight of it all. This feeling is called anxiety”. Freud categorized anxiety into three different kinds: the first is realistic anxiety, the second is moral anxiety, and the last is neurotic anxiety. (Boeree, 2006 : 7).
- Realistic anxiety
Realistic anxiety involves a fear in the real world. According to Duane P. Schultz, realistic anxiety serves the positive purpose of guiding our behavior to escape or protect ourselves from actual dangers. (Schultz, 2008 : 60). Realistic anxiety is closely related to fear. But, it does not involve a specific fearful object. (Feist, 2008 : 40).
- Moral anxiety
“Moral anxiety results from a conflict between the id and superego. A person with a strong inhibiting conscience will experience greater conflict than a person with a less stringent set of moral guidelines. Like neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety has some basis in reality.” (Schultz, 2008 : 60).
- Neurotic anxiety
Neurotic anxiety is defined as concern about an unknown danger. According to Feist, “The feeling itself exists in the ego, but it originates from id impulses. People may experience neurotic anxiety during childhood, these feelings of hostility are often accompanied by fear of punishment, and this fear becomes generalized into unconscious neurotic anxiety.” (Feist, 2008 : 34).
Neurotic anxiety has its basis in childhood, in a conflict between instictual gratification and reality. This neurotic anxiety is an unconscious fear of being punished for impulsively displaying id-dominated behavior. (Schultz, 2008 : 60). Like Henry J. Eggold’s statement, he stated that “To put it quite simply, neurotic symptoms arise from sin.” (Eggold, 1961 : 4)
- Defence Mechanism
Based on Tyson, the defence is served by the person’s unconscious desires. (Tyson, 1999 : 17). According to Phebe Cremer, he stated the definition of defence mechanism, he said that “Defence mechanism are cognitive process that function to protect the individual from excessive anxiety or other negative emotions. They also protect the person from loss of self-esteem and, in the extreme, the loss of self-integration.” (Cramer, 2009 : 12).
Thus, the ego constantly tries to reconcile the blind, irrational claims of the id and the superego with the realistic demands of the external world. Finding itself surrounded on three sides by divergent and hostile forces, the ego reacts in a predictable manner—it becomes anxious. It then uses repression and other defense mechanisms to defend itself against this anxiety. (Freud in Feist, 2008 : 36).
Freud, categorized the defence mechanism into fifteen parts. Those are: denial, reppression, asceticism, isolation, displacement, turning against the self, projection, altruistic surrender, reaction formation, undoing, introjection, identification with the aggressor, regression, rationalization, and sublimation. (Boeree, 2006 : 7-11). But, the thesis writer only used denial as a part that match to the main character of V for Vendetta’s movie script.
- Denial
As Boeree statement, he said that “Denial involves blocking external events from awareness. If some situation is just too much to handle, the person just refuses to experience it. As you might imagine, this is a primitive and dangerous defense – no one disregards reality and gets away with it for long!” (Boeree, 2006 : 7-8).
Although it is usually seen in adults in conditions of severe stress or pain, people will also sometimes distort some aspects of a situation, (Friedman, 2015 : 59). As Aaron T. Beck statement, he said that “They generally reject suggestions that their behavior is excessive or that they may have some psychiatric disorder. When confronted with dfficult problems, they tend to gloss over them. They are likely to deny any obvious mistakes they make.” (Beck, 2009 : 98).
- Deppression
Many theorists has been said that the definition of depression is paradoxes. Based on Aaron T. Beck statement, he said that depression is a clinical syndrome for over 2.000 years but there is no explanation has been found. (Beck, 2009 : 3). Beck also said “There is considerable controversy regarding the classification of depression. Some authorities contend that depression is primarily a psychogenic disorder; other maintain just as firmly that is caused by organic factors.” (Beck, 2009 : 4). According to Mary Beth, the principal investigator of Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania stated that “However, there does not have to be a family history of depression for it to occur. People who have low self-esteem, who consistently view themselves also prone to depression.”
To clarify the definition of depression, based on Saul McLeod, “Depression is a mood disorder which prevents individuals from leading a normal life,” (McLeod, 2015). Depression caused by the traumatic experience, thus, people would become depressed. As Beck stated that “When a person is subjected to situations reminiscent of the original traumatic experiences, she may then become depressed.” (Beck, 2009 : 271).
- Vengeance
Vengeance can also be said as revenge. The people who did the vengeance had bad experience with his enemy. He felt the pressure and the suffer were unfair. He wanted to take a vengeance over his enemy. No matter how big damage will caused by, how many people will die, etc. Based on Janne van Doorn on her journal, she said that in case of why people had desire to took a vengeance is the correlation between the anger, feelings of revenge, and hate are closely related. But, they are characterized by different focus, anger focuses on changing/restoring the unjust situation caused by another person; feelings of revenge focuses on restoring the self; and hatred focuses on eliminating the hated person/group. (Doorn, 2018 : 1-2).
According to Gollwitzer, he said that “Revenge is a personal response to unjust treatment. Its goal to achieve some sort of payback, to get even with the villain, to make the offender get what he or she deserves.” (Gollwitzer, 2012 : 3). As Nurul Farhana Low stated that “Particularly revenge tragedy as an examination of the notion of selfhood and identity in the face of social change and upheaval.” (Low, 1999 : 32). Doorn also said “After all, it has been argued that revenge is an act of hate”. (Doorn, 2018 : 1).
When the pe VHSl;SKNCSKJSKJCXX,V.,XC.VVSrson has desire to take a vengeance, he is going to be very angry and feel resentful. He turned into a villain, he has no mercy. The offense caused an affective imbalance between the offender and the victim, and so revenge might aim at redressing this imbalance by making the offender suffer himself (Gollwitzer, 2012 : 3)
As a result of have desire to take vengeance, the avenger uses his best tactics, he uses all of his energy to make his action run smoothly. As Sanam stated that “The whole structure of the revenge tragedy can be understood in terms of the revenger’s efforts to free himself from the restraints that forbid the act of vengeance, a process that involves moving from sanity to madness.” (Hallet and Hallet in Sanam, 2011 : 33). Not solely without a reason, the person who take a vengeance as a revenge certainly knows what caused him act reckless. Like Eric Jaffe statement, he said that “Revenge can succed only when an offender understands why the act of vengeance has occured (Jaffe, 2011). If the message is not delivered, it cannot restablish justice. (Gollwitzer in Jaffe, 2011).
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH OF METHODOLOGY
- Research Design
In this study, the researcher uses qualitative research. This research include qualitative research because this research analyzes the problems in V for Vendetta’s movie script based on Marxist perspective. John W. Creswell said that:
Qualitative research is a means for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem. The process of research involves emerging questions and procedures, data typically collected in the participant’s setting, data analysis inductively building from particulars to general themes, and the researcher making interpretations of the meaning of the data (Creswell, 2009).
The explanation is qualitative research will reveal events or facts, atmosphere, phenomena, not using a numeric, table, or statistical procedure.
- Source of Data
The data of this study are in the form of a sentence or scene in V for Vendetta’s movie script. The data are taken from the movie script. To support this study, the researcher takes all V for Vendetta’s movie script that was written by Wachowskis as the main data. V for Vendetta is a dystopian political thriller movie based on a novel with the same title. This movie was directed by James McTeigue and produced byJoel Silver, Grant Hill, and The Wachowskis. This movie was starred by Clive Ashborn, Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea, and John Hurt.
- Techniques of Collection Data
In this study, the techniques of collection data is using close reading technique. Here, the thesis writer used some steps to collection the data. First, watch the V for Vendetta’s movie. Second, print the movie script to clear up the dialogue of the movie. Third, watch the movie again and match the movie with the script. The last, findings and give a mark the proof which is founded in movie script and retype the proof into the Microsoft Word and the thesis writer would gathers into one.
- Techniques of Analysis Data
In this study, since the thesis writer uses qualitative research, then the researcher will used inductive techniques. As Cresswell said that:
Distinct from this theoretical orientation are qualitative studies in which theory (or some other broad explanation) becomes the end point. It is an inductive process of building from the data to broad themes to a generalized model or theory. (Cresswell, 2009)
The explanation is the data becomes an aid to find the final result. The collected data will be interpreted and analyzed through the struggle of the oppressed people in V for Vendetta’s movie script.
CHAPTER IV
ANALYSIS
In this chapter consists of the analysis from the data that has been collected. The analysis is based on the statement of the problem of this thesis and the aim of this chapter is to analyze and give the answer.
- Why V did his vengeance against the government depicted in V for Vendetta’s movie script.
- Because V had bad experience and became a victim in the past.
Based on the V for Vendetta’s movie script, the incident began in the past, starting on November 5th. The date itself was chosen to honor Guy Fawkes, who failed to blew up the British Parliament building in the 17th century. The story of Guy Fawkes was a true story.
It is proves that in the movie script, what was done by Guy Fawkes in the past, repeating in the future. The act of vengeance was conducted by a man named V. He used same identity as Guy Fawkes, wear all-black outfits and a mask. At the time, Britain was ruled by a facist chancellor named Adam Sutler, during his reign, Sutler kidnapped and killed every citizen who was considered enemy of the government such as immigrants, Muslims, sex offenders, and terrorist. And V was the one of the victim. It was the first motive that caused V did his vengeance.

(5, INT. EVEY’S APARTMENT – NIGHT)
The second motive was in the movie script, the governement did something in the past to demolish all minority citizens. They kidnapped then killed directly even make the victim used as experimental material in one of the state-owned laboratories to create new invention. Another thing that proves is the government at that time also conducted a secret experiment which used the victim’s body as a guinea pig. It is proves in scene that the scientist named Delia Surridge who did the execution to her research stock in laboratory and she said, “I find myself hating them.” (94. INT. LARKHILL MEDICAL RESEARCH BLOCK). Another prove in the scene that they were treat the victims like the animals is “we see a series of horrifying images; naked human beings kept in cages, treated like animal,…” (61, FLASHBACK – INT. LARKHILL).
According to the findings, the thesis writer concluded that there are two motives which caused why the main character, V had desire to took a vengeance. V as a victim had the violation in the past may had depression too before he made a decisions. Based on the proofs that the thesis writer found is what V deserved was inhuman. It will examine the theory of Mario Gollwitzer, he stated that “Revenge is only satisfactory if the offender acknowledges that revenge was taken against him because and in virtue of his prior unfair behavior”. (Gollwitzer, 2012 : 4).

(133, INT. VALERIE’S SHRINE – DAY)
Because the bad experience in the past, he appeared in public and appeared as a terrorist after he was recovered. He would do the vengence to the government. As Janne van Doorn states that why people had desire to took a vengeance is the correlation between the anger, feelings of revenge, and hate are closely related. (Doorn, 2018 : 1). Seems like V, he was angry and hate the government, and decided to took a vengeance.
- Because V wants the oppresor suffering, he wants the oppresor pay back everything
The longer, the vengeance actions are getting worse. Bad experience in the past change V into a villain, he has no mercy. To realize his goals, V set plan, i.e: he would blow up The Old Bailey and Madame Justice building, he would warn the government of his appearing and sabotage the TV broadcast, killed all people who related to Larkhill’s tragedy, and the last he would blow up the Parliament’s building. The action carried out by V, who started to blow up The Old Bailey and Madame Justice, the historic building in London. It was one of V’s warnings to government to demand revenge.

Next day, he was run his second plan. He sabotage the broadcast to show himself, to spoke up, to inform the citizens how bad the government is. He also convince all citizens that their country is no longer peaceful. Thus, the government could see what would happen next.

It is proves that V is really mean to carried out his speak, he also say something that can make the citizens surprised. He said that “Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and opposition.” (32, EXT. FINGER HEADQUARTERS – DAY). It was addressed to the government.
The third plan which is he would kill all people who related to Larkhill’s tragedy. Based on the movie script, V would kill four people in different days. V did this plan smoothly. The first person who V chose to kill was a TV presenter named Prothero. At that time, he was influenced all citizens that the government’s law should be obeyed, no matter how cruel the law was. In addition, he also broadcast the lies about what happened at Larkhill, therefore, the government’s plan ran smoothly.
V went to Prothero’s penthouse and met him, a few moment later, Prothero was died. V killed him. After killed him, V leaving a Carson rose above Prothero’s lifeless body. Finch, a policeman with his assistant investigate the death of Prothero.
The two men stand over Prothero’s lifeless body. A single Carson rose sits like an offering to the fresh corpse.

Next day, the second people who would killed by V is a bishop named Lilliman. A few moments later, V appeared in bishop’s room and Evey is ran away from the room. There was a brief conversation between V and the bishop, a shootout ensued between them and finally the bishop was dead. Like the last murdered, V leaving a Violet Carson rose on the bishop’s lifeless body. The murdered goes well.
The Bishop’s lifeless body lies outlined in chalk. The circle bloodstain floats above the head like the last word balloon of a crude comic strip character. On his chest lies a Violet Carson Rose.
(82, INT. LILLIMAN’S QUARTERS – NIGHT)
Next person who would killed by V is a Dr. Surridge. Dr. Surridge is the scientist that she was the Chief Medical Examiner in Larkhill. She knew that the dead of Prothero and Lilliman was did by V, she also knew that the next victim is herself. Without her knowing, V has already injected the poison into her body ten minutes before she was sleep. When she opened her eyes, she shocked because V was in her bedroom. Before she dying, she told everything, the story in Larkhill in the past and she apologize to V. Time goes by and Dr. Surridge finally died in her bedroom.
The windows are open. Delia lies on her bed, her eyes fixed. Finch sees the Violet Carson in her lap and knows they are, one more, too late.
(92, INT. DELIA SURRIDGE’S BEDROOM – NIGHT)
One by one the people who involved in the incident at Larkhill was killed by V. Prothero, Lilliman, Dr. Surridge, and the last is the Chancellor Adam Sutler. As if V knew that Sutler was hard to founded because he ‘hide” on the government bunker. Unexpectedly, V met Commander Creedy, therefore V used Mr. Creedy to bring Sutler to him with give him a promise that Mr. Creedy could be the leader of the country and promised he would not blew up the Parliament’s building. Due to the V expectations, the reality was really come. Mr. Creedy bring out Adam Sutler to him with his head closed and the hands tied behind his back. Before Suttler killed, V places a Violet Carson rose beside him. Finally, Suttler was shot right in his head. Creedy killed Sutler.
V
I have something for you,
Chancellor. A farewell gift for
all the things you’ve done, for
the things you might have done,
and for the only thing you have
left.
He places a Violet Carson rose beside him.
…
Creedy lifts his GUN and BLOWS a bright red hole in Sutler’s head.
(155-156, INT. VICTORIA STATION – NIGHT)

Finally, V run his last plans successfully. He was already prepare to blew up the Parliament’s building before. He set up the rain with filled million of bombs. But, he decided to die in the train. He ask Evey for help because only she could help him. He said that Evey should bring V’s body in the train and she must hit the control button of the train twelve minutes after V died.
After that V was died, and Evey was cried but Evey could did anything that V said. She waited the right time in her watch and then she hit the control button. Finally, the movie’s ending was run smoothly as V expectation.
The BUILDING ERUPTS, its walls and towers that have stood for centuries yielding to the baptismal flame of new life.
(165, EXT. PARLIAMENT – NIGHT)
Based on the finding above, the thesis writer concluded that the main character, V was determined to did the criminal acts which also dangerous for himself. Because of he was really angry and feel hatred, it can makes he did not care about his actions. For him, the most important thing was the goals of his vengeance was realized. Same as Gollwitzer statements, he said “Two hypotheses are tested simultaneously: (1) Victims are satisfied if they see the offender suffer, even if this suffering was imposed by fate; (2) Victims are satisfied if the offender signals that he understands why revenge was imposed upon him”. (Gollwitzer, 2012 : 2).
- Because V may had some psychiatric disorder.
As Aaron T. Beck statement, he said that “They generally reject suggestions that their behavior is excessive or that they may have some psychiatric disorder. When confronted with dfficult problems, they tend to gloss over them. They are likely to deny any obvious mistakes they make.” (Beck, 2009 : 98). Like the plot of V for Vendetta’s movie script, it is depicts that the main character had denial of his action. He denied the fact that his action was not dangerous, he thought that his action was a commenable act.
EVEY (V.O)
You really think blowing up
Parliament is going to make this
country a better place?
V (V.O)
There is no certainty. Only
