Communication context
Communication context refers to the setting upon which communication happens (Shamne et al., 2019). It helps create meaning and have an impact on what and how something is said. Communication context could influence Padgett Beale Manager and Employees’ expectations and their relationships with the Islanders because the Islanders have a high communication context where there’s less verbal and formal communication. Instead, there’s more internalized comprehension of what is being communicated, while for the Padgett Beale Managers and Employees, communication is rule-oriented, and people move by external rules. The differences in communication context could affect the relationship between the two groups because the Managers expect the relationship with the Islanders to be formal. On the other hand, the Islanders expect non-formal communication and relationships.
Power-distance refers to how individuals belonging to a particular culture prospect power relationships (Guo et al., 2020). Power distance could influence the relationships and expectations between Padgett Beale Managers and Employees and the Islanders in decision-making because the managers and employees view power as democratic and participative. In contrast, the Islanders consider power as autocratic and believe that their role is to follow orders.
The differences in the communication context and power-distance could contribute to the following conflicts:
- Conflicts in decision making since one culture embraces an autocratic type of power while the other embraces participative.
- There’ll be a problem in relationships and connection establishment.
- Challenges in setting boundaries and adjusting to each other’s new culture (Binns, 2020).
Managers and executives could use different ways to solve conflicts whenever they arise. Some of the techniques they can use include:
- Researching on the leading causes of the conflict.
- Arranging meetings with the parties involved in the conflict and talk with them about the conflict.
- Objectively focusing on final and long term solutions of the conflicts (Mohamed et al., 2019)
In conclusion, from the discussion above, the two factors: communication context and power distance play a significant role in identifying cultural differences between Padgett Beale and the Islanders. These cultural differences should be eliminated to enable the acquisition of Island Banking Services. In the future, both cultural groups should embrace each other’s cultures for easier elimination of cultural barriers.
