The Concept of Self
The possible selves and the private and public self, are models of personality that are most relatable. The possible selves’ model is linked to an individual when someone identifies the version of the self they could be, but it is not necessarily happening in the current state. In the private and public self-theory, the argument that exists is that for private self is directly linked to private self-consciousness. Therefore the inner experiences of an individual, in that case, are less likely to be shared with others. However, for the public, self-consciousness is how an individual decides to appear to others. Hence public self is what individuals allow other people to see. I relate to these theories because they offer a basic overview of the psychological development of humans. The theories are closely related in that where the public selves view sees humans have thoughts and desires. Moreover, the private and public self is how the current generation wants to be identified.
Digital media has a significant influence on the concept of self in that it shapes most of the human experiences. The modern youths spend a lot more time on digital platforms getting information or entertainment, which unconsciously creates their understanding and expectations in regular interactions. One of the most notable influences of the media on self has been the perception of getting rich and successful marriages is created and fed to the masses through adverts and marriage shows. These views are then engraved into the human mind and form a significant part of our world view.
Social media has become a central influence of our perception of self. With these platforms, people are often accused and actively try to portray a perfect version of themselves. Moreover, individuals decide on what to put private and public through social media platforms. For instance, when creating a post on social media, one is worried about seeing them as smart enough, like, or sharing the post. This influence comes out clearest in photo posts where people will typically only share their “perfect” pictures or experiences. For instance, when sharing a photo, one has to select the image with their best smile, lighting, meal, and other superficial things. I thus agree with the existence of a digital self, who is the image we have created on social media and want others to perceive us.
