‘Black Lives Matter’
‘Black Lives Matter’ came to be broadly recognized as a social movement that was majorly a black-centered project. As discussed by Wilkins, Livingstone & Levine (2019), upon its establishment, the main aim of this movement was to create a local power and synergy for intervening against the violence that was significantly inflicted upon the Black people. The blacks living in the United States had, for a long time, been subjected to harsh treatment from the vigilantes and the state in the nation. The movement also seeks to search for justice for the victims of mass killings, an example being the murder of an unarmed 17-year-old Black boy and the subsequent acquittal of George Zimmerman, who was the culprit. The movement led in protesting against the acquittal of the suspect, seeking for justice to be served right (Wilkins, Livingstone & Levine, 2019). The movement also rallies against ensuring no form of racism against the black community in the nation. The other aim of this movement is to create an integrated network that is ageism free, championing for all people, despite their age, to be given a chance to lead. Additionally, the movement also fights for the marginalized groups, such as fighting for black women against misogyny and sexism, as well as fighting for the transgender communities and their rights as highlighted by Black Lives Matter, (2019).
This movement normally makes use of social media for ensuring collective action and mobilizing people nationally. Since its inception in July 2013, the movement has been using the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag on all social media platforms, more so on both Twitter and Facebook (Wilkins, Livingstone & Levine, 2019). Their significant presence and active engagements on social media platforms have led to a massive call to action from Black communities all over the world to stand for their rights and seek justice together in their different jurisdictions. To join the movement, one can sign up with the movement on the https://www.blacklivesmatterdmv.org/ webpage (Black Lives Matter DC., n.d.) After landing on the page, one provides their basic information such as their name, email address, location, contact details, their twitter handle, and their race. The last part is for the mode of involvement, either through funding, training, donating space or materials, or being a tribe member, an option for the Blacks only (Black Lives Matter DC., n.d.).
According to the YouTube video, despite there being no specific media that is associated with the Black Lives Matter movement, the underlying ideologies are somewhat similar. The intention is to make a specific message viral and drive the intended goals known globally (TED, 2018). The overall aim of the movement is to go viral, in disseminating their information about blacks, and their fight for their rights
