Admission Essay
Ever since I was young, mathematics has always been a favorite subject of mine. As I ascended through different academic stations, my passion for mathematics grew into a passion for statistics. One of the reasons for my passion for statistics is that ultimately, we learn from data. I find this an important motivator as it limits the chance for ambiguity or subjectivity. In today’s, world data is a vital tool through which businesses improve their productivity, and governments disseminate service to their citizens. The information age has influenced the field of statistics by creating avenues through which statisticians can apply statistical techniques to impact everyday life. This is my second reason for choosing a major in statistics, there are many opportunities both full and part-time in statistics at this age.
Advancements in technology leverage applied statistics in many ways. Two of the areas of technology that I am most interested in are machine learning and artificial intelligence. These two innovations are likely to change the nature of the business, agriculture, medicine, and engineering, among other disciplines soon. An interesting fact about both Machine learning and artificial intelligence is that practice in such a field requires a strong mathematical and statistics background. People talk about self-driving cars and smart homes with much focus on programming and information systems. However, statisticians and mathematicians are critical influences over the structure and function of these technologies. The possibilities of what a statistics degree can present are by far my biggest motivating factor. As a statistician, I will have the option of practicing what I love in whatever industry that intrigues and interests me. It is for these reasons that I feel I would be a perfect match for your statistics program.
