Various types of play among children
Unoccupied play
This is usually viewed in children who are between zero to two years. In this kind of play, children do not play at all, but they make random movements without having any objective. This kind of play sets the stage for other types of play.
Solitary play
In this kind of play, children are so engaged in such that they don’t notice anyone. This kind of play is mostly between children aged two to three years. The little child could choose to play with his favorite animal or sit quietly with a book.
Onlooker Play
At this stage, a child watches other kids run up and down, but he does not join them in having fun. This play stage co-occurs with solitary play. It helps a child develop group[ participation skills during play. This play is mostly observed between children aged two and a half to three and a half.
Parallel play
In this stage of play, children play adjacent to each other but do not influence each other. Each child is focused on his play. This parallel play helps children to develop their language effectively. It also helps children to learn how to express their desires and feelings. Most importantly children learn how to understand others and to respect social boundaries
Associative play
It is usually the first stage where social interaction is involved when children are playing. Children engage in an interactive activity without having a common goal. At this stage, children learn how to communicate and teamwork.
Cooperative Play
At this stage, children are always ready to play together. This is usually between four to five years of age. At this stage, group performances and team sports become more fun. Children usually apply the skills they have learned in all previous stages. Children become more active and fully functioning.
