Hurricane Katrina
Ethical behaviours are put to the test during times of emergencies such as floods, wars, and terrorist attacks. So far, Hurricane Katrina is considered to be one of the biggest natural disasters to hit the United States of America. Despite the notices and warning given by the government, most of the New Orleans inhabitants chose to stay. Therefore, most of the people were affected by floods and the destruction of properties. This shows that the government probably used inefficient approaches to create awareness among the citizens living around the affected areas (Gibbens, 2019). However, the government thought that it was well prepared to combat any calamity. For instance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was formed and staffed with well-trained workers to respond to any disaster.
The response to Hurricane Katrina could have been more effective if there was coordination between different government agencies. Apart from having a well-trained team of workers, the citizens could also be trained on how to respond to disasters. Additionally, the government could have used effective approaches to create awareness among the citizens (Gibbens, 2019). In this way, the people could be well informed about the hurricane, and the appropriate emergency preparedness plan could be initiated.
BP Oil Spill
The BP oil spill is one of the biggest sea oil spillages in the history of the United States. On April 20, a wellhead busted in the Gulf of Mexico about forty miles from the southeastern coastline of Louisiana. According to BP, the oil spill was going to have negligible effects. A few months later, it was evaluated that the spilling rate of the oil was approximately three million litres per day (Pallardy, 2019). It was also noted that there was limited information provided to the citizens and the press. Under such circumstances, it was ethical to restrict the information made available to the public to avoid panic and tension among the citizens.
Other organizations have the right to intervene if they feel that the disaster may affect animals. The case of the BP Oil spill had an impact on aquatic life. In such a case, under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act, organizations dealing with wildlife and sea animal have the right to demand answers on the measures taken by BP to stop the oil spill (Pallardy, 2019). Untamed sea animals such as dolphins, sharks, whales, and other fishes need protection when disasters occur.
