Critical Thinking Prompts: Organizational Behavior

Organizations are made of different individuals whose interaction lead to the success of the firm. Groups are part of the organizations, and they comprise of individuals who have a close interaction where the actions of one person can have an impact on the other person within the same organization. Most of the organizational work is done in groups and the effectiveness of a group determines how an organization will be productive. Groups can be formal or informal. Informal groups in organization comprise of two or more persons whose association is not part of the organization or are not prescribed by the organization they are in. A good example is a team of individuals from the same organization who participate in a soccer game during their weekends. A formal group is prescribed by an organization and includes individuals such as managers and their subordinates. The association between workmates influence individual especially when they are under the same organization policies.

To be in a cohesive group means being in a group where members are attached and act as a single unit. A cohesive group is more productive because members understand each other and have a following characteristic. The most cohesive group I have ever been is church group which comprised of youth members. The group members were so close to each other as we were all in the same age group. The group had a common sense of purpose and worked together to complete any task that was assigned to them.

A similarity was evident in that group where all members belonged to a common age group. We shared belief since we worshipped in the same church. This strengthened our similarities, and even though we had different skills, every task was completed in unity due to shared values and attitude. The shared values, beliefs and attitude strengthened our bond and worked together for the success of the church.

Concerning stability, the group ensured that we met twice every week so that we could retain the bond and complete the activities designated by church leaders. Frequent meetings enhanced the group bond. The size of our group was not as big as we were only 15 youths in that church. The small size increased reachability and understanding of one another.

Support for each other was enhanced due to the small number of youths in that church. We know each other’s weaknesses and strengths and were willing to support all members in all ways possible due to the bond created. The group members had increased satisfaction because the weak members were supported by the rest in completing tasks assigned by a church leader. Having common values and attitudes also promoted satisfaction among the group members.
