MSc in Global Health and Development

Understanding the complexities in solving major global problems and shaping health worldwide is a significant challenge that has drawn my interest to pursue MSc in Global Health and Development. Some events have played a part in my decision to pursue the program. For example, the death of my grandmother elicited my desire to pursue health studies. For me, being a part of the nursing students accepted into the 2015 Russian Government Scholarship Scheme opened up opportunities to engage in science studies and research. The outcome of interacting with sciences enabled me to understand what ailed my grandmother. My understanding that there are intersection factors implicated in diseases that increase the number of deaths annually and create a global pandemic further motivated me to apply for MSc in Global Health and Development.

On the one hand, during my bachelor study, I worked in the Department of Central Nervous System for three consecutive years as part of the course practicum. I learned various treatment instructions on how to deliver medical care and emotional support. However, what intrigued me was understanding the background of the patient. Moreover, I was placed in the Children’s hospital, which allowed me to interact not only with patients but also with their parents. The observations received from different patients allowed me to learn possible causes related to maternal and family planning. The experience of working with multiple families in one department gave me enough exposure to the soci

al environment. Additionally, the topic regarding the life expectancy gap has always been my interest. I observed that on average people in my native country fail to live past 70 years. Meanwhile, the neighbouring country has the world’s highest life expectancy. I perceived that social inequality is the primary factor contributing to the

gap. I consider injustice as a fundamental aspect when it comes to the development of both infrastructure and society in general. Looking at “The Future Is Now” SDG Report for 2030 UN Agenda, I came to realise that most issues have an interconnection to inequity. Therefore, reducing inequality will automatically lead to a decline in poverty rates, which results in expansion of cross-branches such as better health, education, and economic growth.

Furthermore, my desire to major in Global Health and Development is supported by the Public Health course that I attended in the third year. The course deepened my understanding of demographic statistic. It has given me the chance to analyse the magnitude of birth rates, newborn and maternal mortalities and their social impact. It also allowed me to learn about population types and issue related to development. The subject has provided me with the capacity to interpret data using several methods, calculation

s, and helped me connect the findings with the real situation through data-driven solutions. For instance, I have used the methods of constructing a variational series, calculating the arithmetic mean value, standard deviation, and arithmetic mean error to calculate the average index maximum blood pressure in medical students on their exams’ day. The aim was to determine the level of anxiety/stress in each of the students’ category. The other example I have learned the use of means of static indicators (coefficients) birth rates, total mortality, and natural growth rate that presented in intensive data to the quantified vital movement of the population, which is necessary for medical service activity planning. I also got the opportunity to learn the rank correlation method by Spearman, which I currently use for my dissertation analysis to determine the quality

of a patient’s life when suffering from diabetes.

I believe your program will allow me to explore different concepts of the health care system and policies across the globe. My interest in the program has always been tied to my curiosity on how success or failure of the health system can occur around the world. I wish to sharpen my knowledge in understanding how undersupply in the healthcare industry can be mitigated as a link to the issue of unsustainable Universal Health Care in some countries, as well as to get a closer look to the concepts of Single Payers and Double-Tiers that has been adopted successfully by many governments. It will also enhance my knowledge about the government’s role in disease prevention and health promotion. I believe the key to reducing the problem of epidemics from the root is not how successful an individual treatment is but how comprehensive government actions are in preventing and providing knowledge to the public. This program will deepen my knowledge in understanding the cooperation between policymakers and the ministries in creating an adequate infrastructure for the healthier community.

Finally, by studying at XXX University, I will obtain the unique opportunity to interact and acquire valuable knowledge with scholars from multidisciplinary backgrounds, which will expand the views from various perspectives. My experience as a secretary for the Student Association in my native country has developed my leadership skill and teamwork. I qualified to be part of the rep

resentatives, that received an invitation to showcase my country’s culture at the Presidential Palace, which will be witnessed by the country’s leader. Other than that, my bachelor study required me to learn a new language from scratch, that has improved my adaptability skill significantly. I believe those skills are essentials to help me become a better global health practitioner.

Continuing my commitment to the program, I will seek experience in health or development organisations to deepen my understanding in the planning scheme, policy-making, creating solutions and get a closer look into local and global issues. I would love to apply the skills gained, in the organisations setting (government or NGO), particularly in the Global South, to address the social issues and working toward Sustainable Development Goals.
