Descriptive Essay
There many things that might have happened when Oliver visited Duchess. Since both of them had a different interest in each other, they were both manipulative. In this case, Oliver, who was the Jeweler, wanted to marry the daughter of Duchess, while the Duchess wanted Oliver to settle his gambling debt.
The expected event is that Duchess introduced her daughter to Oliver, who was able to show interest to the daughter(Woolf, 1938). This was good from Duchess since she knew that Oliver could not date her daughter without her support. Oliver was manipulated and therefore agreed to anything offered by the Duchess.
On the other hand, Oliver wanted to dine with the royal family but knew the Duchess was in a bad financial position. This was the best position to make her agree to any request offered by Oliver (Woolf, 1938). Basing on the aftermath of the meeting, Oliver might have been manipulated, and the daughter told her to accept anything being said by Oliver for her mother to get the money.
Oliver seems regretful after buying the pearl since she did not test them, which depicts that the jewelry might have been fake. The other thing is that the daughter of Duchess might have fallen in love with Oliver due to his hard work and also his richness. Oliver might have come out with a happy man who had won what he had wanted for a long time.
On the contrary, they may have both disagreed due to their manipulative natures. They might have learned that all each other wanted to be desired, which needed either of them to fulfill, and hence they had to call it off.
