Module 7.4 Module 7 Lab
- a) Men tend to be larger than women in bicep girth. In Bicep girth, males are skewed to the left while the female is skewed to the right.
- In waist girth, thigh girth, and abdominal girth men tend to about the same size as women. Both of the male girth and female girth is skewed to the right.
Typical waist girth males | Typical waist girth females |
84.5 – 8.8 to 84.5 + 8.8 75.7 to 93.3 | 69.8 – 7.6 to 69.8 + 7.6 62.2 to 77.4 |
The substantial overlap in waist measurements? Yes
Typical thigh girth males | Typical thigh girth females |
56.5 – 4.3 to 56.5 + 4.3 52.2 to 60.8 | 57.2 – 4.6 to 57.2 + 4.6 52.6 to 61.8 |
The substantial overlap in waist measurements? Yes
Typical abdominal girth males | Typical abdominal girth females |
87.7 – 8.4 to 87.7 + 8.4 79.3 to 96.1 | 83.7 – 9.9 to 83.7 + 9.9 73.8 to 93.6 |
The substantial overlap in waist measurements? Yes
Typical bicep girth males | Typical bicep girth females |
34.4 – 3.0 to 34.4 + 3.0 31.4 to 37.4 | 28.1 – 2.7 to 28.1 + 2.7 25.4 to 30.8 |
The substantial overlap in waist measurements? No
- The typical bicep male girths do not substantially overlap with the typical bicep females girths and the interval for males is greater than the interval for females hence the males tend to be larger than women. While in the other three remaining measurements (waist girth, thigh girth, and abdominal girth) there is a substantial overlap in the interval for males and females, suggesting that men tend to be about the same size as women.
- a) The typical interval is from Q1 to Q3: from 68 cm to 84.5 cm.
- b) The typical interval is from;
Mean – Std dev. to Mean + Std dev.
76.98 – 11.01 to 76.98 + 11.01
65.97 cm to 87.99 cm
- c) Q1 to Q3: The interval from 68 cm to 84.5 cm is best to identify the typical measurements because the distribution is right-skewed.
- a) The mean=73 and the median=73.4 beats/minutes both represent men in this sample because their distribution is symmetric. The median=76, represent women in the sample because their distribution is skewed.
- b) Women have more variability in their heart rates; because they have a higher interquartile range than men.
The interquartile range for women is; (80-68) =12
While the Interquartile range for men is; (78-70) =8
- c) “Normal” heart rates for women (Q1 to Q3): interval is from 68 to 80.
“Normal heart rates for men (Q1 to Q3): interval is from 70 to 78.
We use quartiles because the distribution for women is skewed.
- d) I think nurses should use different intervals of typical heart rates for adult men vs. adult women. They should use the interval in part c) above, because men’s normal heart rate and the women’s heart rate have different spreads.
