Personal Nursing Philosophy
As a nurse, I believe in high quality holistic and patient-centered care. Apart from the contemporary nursing roles such as caring for the patients and executing the instruction of physicians, nursing is a noble profession and a calling which requires practitioners to show passion and compassion (McEwen & Wills, 2014). It is composed of four primary metaparadigms; person, environment, health, and nursing. They are central to the nursing profession and form a framework by which most objectives of the profession are achieved. The following is a description of how the metaparadigms influence my nursing philosophy.
A person is the recipient of nursing care. Nursing care should be person-centered, and delivered in consideration of the attitudes, preferences, values, necessities, and beliefs. Patients are central to the medical decisions that are made regarding their health. They should be treated with dignity and respect and given the best quality of care regardless of the medical condition. The decisions made by patients regarding their health should be respected and the responsibility of healthcare practitioners it to give them professional advice to aid them in making sound decisions.
Another metaparadigm is the environment. It is the surrounding of patients, which influences their healthcare experience and outcomes. It involves the social background of patients, their lifestyle, and setting (McEwen & Wills, 2014). The environment influences the implementation of care. Maintenance of a calm and safe environment nor only contributes to positive patient outcomes but also reduces the chance for emergency of intermediate medical conditions, such as nosocomial infections. It is within the scope of a nurse to create an ideal environment for the recovery of patients, which includes ensuring that patients are comfortable with their surrounding.
The health metaparadigm revolves around the wellness of a patient, which is one of the primary concerns in healthcare. It is holistic, involving mental, physical, social, and spiritual health (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Nursing ensures that the patients restore their health through psychological, medical, and social therapies and ensure that they develop coping mechanisms for any resultant unavoidable conditions. Nursing ensures that patient regain the maximum level of functioning and optimal health.
Nursing metaparadigm is central to healthcare because it in involves helping patient to achieve optimal health and functioning (Bousso et al., 2014). It involves the application of theories, research, critical thinking, and clinical study to under stand the pathophysiology of diseases and care for patients. Nursing calls for compassion and equal treatment of patients. It is therefore within the scope of nursing to improve the quality of life of patients.
The metaparadigm I would like to eliminate is nursing. It can be eliminated because it covers all that has already been covered in the rest of the metaparadigms. For instance, the perception of patients in nursing has already been covered in the person metaparadigm. Restoration of the full functioning and welfare of patient is reflected in the health paradigm.
The concept I would add is incorporation of technology. The tremendous advancement of technology has significantly improved the efficiency of service delivery and also the patient outcomes (Friganović, 2016). Technologies such as electronic health records and mobile health applications directly affect the service delivery and professional responsibilities in nursing. Thus, it would be prudent for technology to be part of the technology, which has a promising potential for improvement of healthcare industry.
