Personal Statement for Admission into a Law School

I did not get the chance to grow up with my parents for the better part of my childhood. This is because they used to work far away in Africa with the United Nations Food Relief Programme. Growing up with my grandparents meant that I had one to monitor me closely, and I found myself wandering all over the neighborhood after school. Despite not being close to my parents, I was very observative of what happened. Most of it, however, happened when I was in school. I often got into problems with my teachers. The reason for this was that I made arguments out of almost everything until I was convinced. My teacher’s problem was that they did not understand me but instead assumed that I was trying to slow down the learning for other students with my many questions. This was a hard time for me because I felt hurt when I had a burning question, but I could not ask because the teacher could get at rogue heads with me. However, I persevered until I completed the primary education, and it was now my time to get into campus.

During my high school time, I could not understand why people engage in voluntary activities such as environmental conservation, political campaigns, and many other activities to change society. However, I got a new understanding of this when joining college to further my studies. I enrolled for a business course, and I struggle to pursue it for the first and second years. For all the two years, I never felt any completeness in the course. However, it came the last semester of my second year, when our class was introduced to a unit referred to as business law and some philosophy classes covering topics such as Global problems and Contemporary Moral problems. This was my first time to enjoy class discussions and even doing assignments on my own. I had developed a passion for this field. These few units had changed my orientation completely. I remember that I had become one of the constant debates in class, as I advocated for one method of global distribution over others. I did something that I had never done in my school life, approaching my professor after lecture time to further my arguments and questions.

Studying the few law units opened my eyes, and I came to understand why my father was ever complaining about his work and why my mother referred to him as lazy-because he never liked going to his work. I also understood why there are many volunteers out there trying to practice what makes them happy. I plan to make my legal training to make society better. My practice will not be about wealth acquisition, fame, or anything else, but rather, it is a passion and calling. Therefore, I am convinced that my practice will be for the community’s good and not for my gain. I could volunteer to practice law for the less privileged, but this only happens if I have attended a reputable law school to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills. Though I cannot say that I wasted my two years studying a business course in college, I believe the time was important for me because it provided an opportunity to understand who I am and what I want for myself and society. I am hopeful that my request to join the school of law will be considered.
