Working remotely has helped me strike a stable balance between work and family matters
When I saw how much my brother was making working remotely, I could not think of anything else but resigning from my office work. He was flexible and he would take vacations whenever he needed unlike me. As a traditional employee, I worked under pressure and through a tight schedule – I would only ask for off days when it was necessary. A few years after resigning, working remotely has predominated the business world. Working remotely is important to me because it offers me a better work-life balance, improves my productivity, and promotes my wellness.
Working remotely has helped me strike a stable balance between work and family matters. I did not like the ordeal I went through as a traditional office employee. The pressure of waking up early, working under a tight schedule, and getting home late from work was unbearable – I did not have time with my family. Surprisingly, my brother didn’t have to contend with all that pressure since he was working remotely; I could not help admiring his affluent life. One particular morning, I gathered enough courage, drafted a resignation letter, and handed it to my employer. Since then, I have been able to allocate enough time to my profession and family affairs – Nobody pushes me to work under pressure and I have enough time with my family. Working remotely is not easy, but having a flexible schedule helps me and my family live a better life.
Subsequently, working remotely has improved my productivity and effectiveness by increasing contact hours. Earlier on, as an office worker, I would spend more time with my colleagues discussing non-work topics. We did not care what would happen because most of the time we were forced to be in office even when we were tired. Our office was fully packed and the frequent distraction from my colleagues lowered my performance. However, when I started working as a telecommuter my productivity increased drastically; I would set my priorities right to get my work done quickly and correctly. Since I do not commute to work, I have more free time to handle whatever task that comes my way. Comparing the scorecards of office workers and telecommuters, I still hold that working remotely improves performance.
Furthermore, working remotely has greatly improved my physical well-being. With all the time, I can exercise at home wherever it is convenient for me. I do not have to seek permission from my employer to go to the gym. I only need to organize myself to know where I need to be and when. More so, I have sufficient time to download applications – like yoga – to help me when meditating. Generally, I have enough time to cater for my physical, spiritual and mental health.
If working remotely has not done much for me, at least, it has helped me create time for my family; improve my work efficacy, and boost my health. Lately, many companies have embraced working remotely and in the end, committed telecommuters will enjoy the outcome. With advanced technology, not a single company will want to lag behind. I think even the conventional office workers will fight to be seen to embrace technology. If I were to choose between working remotely and working in the office, I would still go for the former gazillion times.
