Narrative inquiry
Narrative inquiry refers to the process involved in the collection of information for research purposes through a narration. Most if not all information is presented as a story. Journals, letters, interviews, and oral stories are literary works that are part of the narrative inquiry. The aforementioned technique is used in various fields of study. However, it is highly used in the social sciences. This paper explains how narrative inquiry uses both theoretical and methodological processes to outline the characteristics of a research study. I will use genre theory to describe the mythic and narrative aspects of a persuasion message.
Genre theory suggests that there are similar situations in narratives that elicit the same responses. Persuasive texts are placed in the expository genre. In this genre, writers compare opposing perspectives to analyze and draw up conclusions that have overriding opinions. Narrations determine the storytelling in texts which aim to influence others. A powerful story is the main precursor to an attentive audience. The narration of a persuasive text also determines the type of genres and subgenres. Some people are extremely endowed with the spirit of narration and they can express the mythical aspects of persuasion. Highly persuasive individuals use skills such as listening and assertiveness. Furthermore, they use periodic rewards to convince listeners to pay attention to. The genre of a persuasive text determines the type of narration and mythic implications that come with it.
Western Michigan University published a narrative inquiry about how teachers perceive their professional development. This research uses experience findings of career development to contrast the current research. According to the study, students’ achievement relies significantly on the professional development of their teachers. Teachers who participated in the research affirmed that professional development comes as a result of being close to students. The findings of this research document have first-hand cases that address the narration inquiry. This study was carefully articulated with research findings and a body of the theoretical framework. The structure of this narrative is constructed in a progressive way that presents the essay’s claim effectively. The topic question from the problem statement is addressed fully using narrations. Additionally, there is a quality assessment that confirms the hypothesis in the form of a narration. Cohort studies use a research design that uses samples that are prospectively collected and evaluated concerning the outcome. These studies aim to expose potential risk factors by determining the initial participants who were associated with the risk factors. Cohort studies might be difficult because of the number of variables. However, it is highly efficient because it creates a standardized outcome. An example of narrative inquiry in cohort studies involves a team of volleyball players at the beach. The problem statement is whether the use of sunscreen can prevent the players’ skin damage. There are two cohort groups; one which uses sunscreen and the other group that did not apply it. After the game, the two groups are tested for skin damage. The findings are that the cohort who did not use sunscreen appears to have way more skin damage. This study finds that the use of sunscreen is the best way to prevent skin damage. According to the report, exposing your skin to the sun without applying sunscreen is likely to be detrimental to your health. This cohort study fits in the framework of a narrative inquiry because the findings are based on qualitative analysis.
Conducting a narrative inquiry is a strategic process that requires one to have background knowledge about the topic of discussion. Once you have the topic, you can select the participants of the study. Most narratives revolve around one character, however, there can be several people in the narration. Consequentially, you will collect said data form the chosen group in the form of interviews and other field tests. Accurate depictions of what the participants say are critical because the research is supposed to be objective. Construct the story about the experiences you collected with a steady accuracy. The final step is the evaluation of the accuracy involved when creating the narrative. An effective inquiry is holistic and has a very low error margin which occurs because of unavoidable bias.
All in all, narrative inquiries have become a fundamental part of qualitative analysis. As explained, persuasive texts use narrations and mythic elements to improve depiction. This increases the chances of the audience becoming persuaded. Furthermore, the accuracy provided by this method makes it a critical tool for the social sciences. Humans learn through storytelling, therefore, this analytical tool helps many understand research topics which could have otherwise been too complex. Cohort studies provide the best research materials that can be presented in a narrative form. This is because the generalization of variables occurs when groups are formed. Cumulatively, narrative inquiries can help solve a lot of research questions by providing quality analytical data.
