Abstract

This paper explores an article that has researched cultural competence care (cc) to patients with mental disorders. From that research article, there are many facts from conducted research; hence this paper agrees strongly to that piece of work. It shows the purpose of conducting culturally sensitive care to Black patients. It also gives guidance on what one should know before he/she conducts competent care to Black patients with mental health problems so that the process to be effective. It also depicts why Black patients may not be interested in taking the initiative to seek help from trained personnel when facing depression. It suggests that cc care to black patients with mental health problems is of great importance, and the patient should embrace it as it considers their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. It also has findings from conducted researches. It also shows the desired outcome of giving cc care to Black patients with mental health disorders.

Cultural Sensitivity Care to Patients with Mental Health Problems and its Importance

This article gives information about taking care of black patients with mental health disorders. It shows how black patients with mental disorders should be taken care of considering their cultural traditions, beliefs, and attitudes regarding depressions. It also shows how family members can help to contribute to patients with mental disorders in that family members help in the healthcare settings of the patients in outpatient, inpatient, and home care settings. Family members need to understand what to experience reduced anxiety regarding the care, what to expect, and to feel satisfied with the care given to patients. The competent care given has got its importance to black patients in that it promotes clear communication, effective interaction, and trust with the healthcare team hence promotes the delivery of appropriate and planned care.

Article Summary

Cultural competence care is holistic and sensitive to appropriate cultural practices. It involves black understanding patients with mental health disorders and providing them with social support, creating trust between the black patient and the caregiver, and providing them with quality care. Cultural responsiveness is provided by trained personnel, and it is mainly done in at-home care basis environment. The information required to help black patients with mental disorders is gathered from the patients themselves with the help of a questionnaire. Family members of the black patient with mental problems should cooperate with the personnel providing cc care for the process to be active. Also, intervention by clergymen or spiritual leaders is critical. Under this article, providing cc care to black patients with mental health disorders promotes clear communication between the care provider and the patient, reducing the patient’s anxiety of receiving this mental care and promoting trust and productive interactions among others…… The main goal of providing cc care to black patients with mental health disorders is to make the black patients with mental disorders and their families feel reduced anxiety about receiving mental care and willingly and comfortably participating in the process.

Facts and statistics

• In a specific study, 86% of black patients with bipolar disorder were misdiagnosed as schizophrenic, and the main contribution to this misdiagnosis was rendered by clinicians assessing symptoms of paranoia.
• When it comes to signs and symptoms of depression, those for the blacks differ from other races.

Findings

From the article, there are several findings which include:

• Minor instances of racism that occur frequently lead to social anxiety disorder among Black patients.
• Black patients often refuse antidepressant medication and prefer other ways of resolving depression, such as partnering with God or “moving on.”
• Unlike other races that don’t react negatively to antidepressant medication, Black patients do react negatively.
• Black patients have got cultural mistrust towards professionals of mental health.

From the above, I have gained a lot of valuable information that I can now use to effectively provide culturally competent care to Black patients with mental disorders. I can engage with a Black patient with mental disorder and be able to create an appropriate friendly environment to help him/her solve the depression affecting his/her mental health.

Article Critique

According to this article, it’s clear that competent care for mental disorders has much importance to the patients. First, it’s holistic because it provides patients with better treatment in terms of social factors about their take on depression. Questionnaires asked by clinicians help create a good rapport and trust with the patient, promoting social support in patients to talk to family members and friends about their condition. This care enables the patient and family members about their expectations during and after receiving the care, hence becoming comfortable and adhering to the care plan. It also enables them to feel satisfied with their cultural beliefs, traditions, and attitudes when asked. It encourages patients to do follow-up clinic visits and diagnostic tests, which gives them social support, taking medications as prescribed and therapy sessions, which helps them develop trust. This reduces the example of the traumatic experience as violence, which promotes good relationships between family members. It promotes proper family functioning and good parenting in low-income livelihoods. The weakness of this competent care is that it brings racism in that it shows black patients believe in their cultural traditions for their treatment for mental disorders compared to other races. This article recommends competent care for black patients with mental disorders since it has more benefits in terms of well-being and socially.

Conclusion.

In conclusion, if well taken, competent care for black patients will have a lot of benefits to individuals since it also accommodates social factors. Clinicians also accommodate both the social lifestyle and cultural beliefs of an individual; this creates trust in patients, hence providing a competent healthcare system to black patients with mental disorders.
