Missing Numbers in a pattern

The missing number is mostly used in Mathematics for solving various problems. There are various to figure out the missing number from the sequence or pattern such as:-

  • Firstly, figure out the order to pattern or sequence. If the order is in descending order, then the number should be smaller in value and when the number in ascending order then the number should be larger value.
  • Second, one can determine the difference between the two numbers to find out the missing number.
  • Thirdly, one can figure out the difference between the numbers which are next to each other.

For Example:- One has to find the missing number from the series 30, 23, ……, 9.

Therefore, we know that the series is in descending order. The numbers are going top to down.

Second, the difference between the first two numbers is = 30 -27 è 7

Now, to find out the missing number one has to subtract 7 from 23, we get

  • 23 – 7 è16

Hence, 16 is the missing number as 16 is 7 more than 9.

Quiz

  1. Which number is missing from the given pattern 1, 3, 9, …., 81?
  2. 21
  3. 29
  4. 25
  5. 27

Answer:- 27, is the correct answer because

Firstly, find out the difference in the series such as the difference in these number is 3 as

1 * 3 è 3

3 * 3 è 9

9 * 3 è27 and 27 * 3 è81

Therefore, one can see that the missing number is 27.

  1. From the following number find out missing number 19,17, …., 13?
  2. 11
  3. 13
  4. 15
  5. 17

Answer:- 15, is the correct answer because the number order is in descending order and the difference between the first two numbers is 2.

19 – 17 è 2

Now, subtract 2 from 17, we get the missing number.

  • 17 – 2 è15

Hence, 15 is the missing number.

  1. Find the missing number from the series 5,7,12,6,8,14,7,…..,16
  2. 8
  3. 9
  4. 7
  5. 5

Answer:- 9,is the correct answer.

From the series, one can see that with the addition of the first 2 numbers, we will get 3rd number.

5 + 7 è12 , 6 + 8 è14

Now, we will subtract 7 from 16, we get the missing number

16 – 7 è9 and 7 + 9 è16

Hence, 9 is the missing number.

  1. Find the missing number from the series 2,3,4,9,8,27,16,……..
  2. 85
  3. 83
  4. 81
  5. 89

Answer:-81, is the correct answer.

There are two clusters of numbers in the given series such as

1st clusterè

22*1
42*2
82*2*2
162*2*2*2

2nd clusterè

33*1
93*3
273*3*3
813*3*3*3

Therefore, the missing number is 81.

  1. Find the missing number 91,85,94,83,97,81,……,79.
  2. 91
  3. 100
  4. 50
  5. 81

Answer:- 100, is the correct answer.

There are two clusters of number in the given series such as

1st clusterè In this cluster with addition of 3 with each number we get the next number.

9191 + 3 è 94
9494  + 3 è 97
9794 + 3 è 100

2ndclusterè In this cluster with the subtraction of 2 from each number we get the next number.

8585 – 2 è 83
8383 – 2 è 81
8181 – 2 è 79

Therefore, from the cluster, we get the missing number that is 100.

  1. Find the missing number 7,5,2,14,3,1,2,6,8,5,3,16,6,2,4,……
  2. 12
  3. 6
  4. 8
  5. 16

Answer:-12, is the correct answer.

With the addition of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd number we get 4th number in this series. Therefore,

7 + 5 + 214
3 + 1 + 26
8 + 5 + 316
6 + 2 + 412

Therefore, the missing number is 12.

  1. Find the missing number 1,12,2,10,3,8,4,6,…….,…….?
  2. 4,6
  3. 5,6
  4. 4,5
  5. 5,4

Answer:- 5,4, is the correct answer.

There are two clusters in this group such as

1st clusterè 1,2,3,4,5,….

In this cluster add 1 with each number, we get next number

1 + 12
2 + 13
3 + 14
4 + 15
5 + 16

2nd clusterè 12,10,8,6,….

In this cluster subtract 2 from each number, we get next number

12 – 210
10 – 28
8 – 26
6 – 24

Therefore, from clusters 1 and 2 we get the missing number as 5,4.

  1. Find the missing number in Table
11218
55…….
12514
  1. 4
  2. 5
  3. 6
  4. 7

Answer:-6, is the correct answer.

Firstly, one needs to find out the difference between 1st two numbers in every row and after that double that number to get the required result as shown below.

Therefore,

1st row

11 – 2 è 9

  • 9 * 2 è 18

2nd row

5 – 2 è 3

  • 3 * 2 è 6

3rd row

12-5 è 7

  • 7 * 2 è 14

Therefore, the missing number is 6.

  1. Find the missing number if 5 * 2 => 10, 10 * 3 => 30 , 15 * 4 => ……..
  2. 40
  3. 50
  4. 60
  5. 70

Answer:-60, is the correct answer. In this one has to simply multiply the 15 with 4 and we get the desired result.

  1. Find the missing number.
566578
12—–30
441448
  1. 21
  2. 31
  3. 41
  4. 51

Answer:- 51, is the correct answer.

To find the missing number. One has to subtract 1st-row digit with 3rd digit.

Therefore, 56 – 12 è 12

65 – 14 è51 and 78 – 48 è 30

Hence, the missing number is 51.
