Chapter 2(Q4)

To ensure a healthy environment in a society with many races and ethnicities, a change in the environment is always necessary to be done. The environment is changed to ensure that it accommodates the people in society. The environment is vital to guarantee that every race is in a position to thrive in it. An environment can be altered by creating an environment from which each person will be required to act to accommodate one another.

In a class environment situation, students of different races are not supposed to call one another their names. This is critical to ensuring an excellent learning environment as there will be nothing to depict one’s race or ethnicity. In most cases, the races of some people reflect the names that they get assigned to. Again, in a society comprising of different races, the students are supposed to be instructed not to carry what is discussed in class outside the class environs. This is because a student can take what has been said by another student regarding a particular race or ethnic group; the people out there may react negatively to the student hence becoming a threat to the student.

Additionally, students are supposed to be advised not to use the third person when speaking in a class consisting of individuals from different races. Using a third person in a society with different races can bring about conflict between the students. In the event when one hears of another one using the third person, a misunderstanding can arise because they may think they are the ones being referred to. Therefore, it is advisable for students in such environments to restrict themselves to using the first person.

Chapter 4(Q5)

Racism entails discrimination directed towards people of a different racial or ethnic group. In other words, it is a negative attitude focused on somebody you don’t share the same group with them. In most cases, it happens because someone feels better than the person in terms of skin color. For instance, in America, different races range from native Americans, Latinos, and African Americans. Because of the feeling that the native Americans feel that they are the majority and superior, they find themselves discriminating the blacks and Latinos. Therefore, racism is a component inherent in a society with different ethnic groups since there must be one group that is a minority as compared to others.

On the other hand, prejudice is the act of having a negative opinion towards a person of the other backgrounds. This always aggravated by the presence of having one person of a particular background. In most cases, when people are in a social setting with people coming from a varied background, there is always a feeling that one group is more advantaged than the other. Therefore, one will develop a negative attitude on the person who does not belong to their background. In other words, one it is a must for one have a prejudiced perception on the person from different culture or ethnicity.

Usually, when one race is more powerful than the other, the issue of racism is always activated to a greater head. In this concern, one will be always discriminate against the other race because they have more power than them. On the other hand, those who don’t have power will discriminate against the other groups because they feel they are much advantaged than them. Focusing on prejudice and power, people with more power will normally have a negative opinion of the other group.

Chapter 7(Q8)

It is unfolded in the document that cultural learning styles inform how the children will perform. For instance, it is known that European Americans are characterized by the will to plan about the future. Therefore, they make plans on how to produce so that in the future, there can be a society that is good like the present ones. The culture is assimilated to every person in society, and therefore the children also impress this in their education. They also value the management of time and having positive values throughout society.

On the other hand, Asian and Latin colors are depicted as the people who value the past and the present. This points out that these people value their history as it informs the present. In this concern, ancestors are regarded as informing what is happening in the current society. Therefore, these cultures teach their children to embrace the past more than the future. In other words, they will leave to know that history is what drives the society they live in. When it comes to the African Americans and Native Americans are considered to be present focused. For these two cultures, people only value the current happenings in society. Thus, they do not consider the past and future as critical in driving their society. In other terms, what is being experienced is what termed to be important. With all these insights from different ethnic groups, it is clear that children who come from European American ethnic groups emerge to be successful. This is because their culture teaches them to be in a position of investing for the future. Therefore, the teachings include innovation so that the future is catered for.

Chapter 9 (Q9)

There are three cultural identities, and they express their identities in society differently. In terms of how they express their behaviors and the individual self, they also vary in how they are expressed. The first category is the Asian American cultural identity. It exhibits the individual self through disregarding one’s self. In other words, in this cultural identity, individuals do not consider themselves as important than others in the culture. To them, the interests of society are more significant than that of the individual self. Again, they also value each one working as one to ensure the society grows together. Individual freedom is also not valued in Asian American culture.

The second cultural identity is a Native America culture. In this culture, the sense of self is expressed through people in the society given autonomy. Native American culture recognizes that people are supposed to be given the freedom to explore opportunities that are in society. Additionally, self-commitment is encouraged throughout the culture. People are required to commit themselves to the activities that they get engaged in. The culture also views illness to stem from the lack of harmony in society. Therefore, to have a sound culture disharmony has to be eliminated.

Thirdly is the northern European culture in which the individual self is inherent in society. Each individual in this culture is supposed to be responsible for their survival. In this culture also, it calls for oneself to be in a capacity to exert control of their emotions and how they express themselves. The culture still emphasizes on having independence. This is to suggest that peoples are supposed to conduct themselves independently to ensure that they better themselves.

Chapter 12 (Q14)

When a person arrives in an environment with a culture that is different from theirs, they have to abide by the practices that are done in the new culture. In other words, one is supposed to change aspects such as language. To native Americans, this has proven to be a difficult endeavor. Therefore, it has meant that they remain unassimilated into the society of America. A language is an important tool since it ensures people can interact comfortably. Thus, if a group of people arrives in a new environment and fail to adapt to the language that is used by the new society, they can never be assimilated well in society. Without a language with which one can use to express themselves to the new people, then they cannot harvest the opportunities present in society.

Again, Native Americans have the perception that European Americans want to use their personal information to exploit them. In other words, native Americans are very sensitive when it comes to information sharing. However, this is something that the society of America considers to be normal. Therefore, through this, American society will continue viewing native America as outcast as they are not ready to abide by society’s practices. In American society, people do not see any big deal to share their information with authority. Thus, people in American society will continue directing racism to the natives. It points out how a group of cultures is supposed to abide by the dominant culture so that it can lead to success. Without this, the people of American society will continue to recognize the society that has failed to practice their culture. If they could have accepted the new cultural practices, they could have been accepted as part of the culture and therefore assimilated into the system.
