The film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, by Michael Gondry, is about love, identity and memory. The main focus is a lonely man called Joel Barish. His relationship has been dysfunctional with Clementine. As their relationship continues to deteriorate, they decide that they should find a way in which memories of their relationship can be deleted. In the film, the author tries to portray Joel as belong regretful for agreeing to the idea of erasing their memories. This essay would focus on a particular scene that Joel was seen lying in the ice while trying to remember his past relationship.

Cinematography
As the scene starts, an extreme Wide shot is taken. While taking this shot, the camera angle was at eye level since the characters were straight ahead of the camera. This shot aimed to show the audience setting of the story (Butler). It was a place which had ice. Joel and Clementine were seen skating in the ice. The next shot was the close-up shot. In this shot, the camera angle was taken from a high angle. The shot was taken to show the expression of love as they were able to hold hands. The other camera shot was medium shot. In this shot, the camera angle was over the shoulder of Joel. The main aim of this shot was to focus on the character Clementine. Clementine expressed affection from the way she laid at Joel’s chest. As the scene continues, the is a mix of both low and high camera angles (Butler). The main aim was to focus on the subject, who was Joel. For instance, when he was kneeling, the camera angle was taken from a high level to show Joel praying or looking up.
Lighting
The first lighting technique introducing the technique is natural lighting. Both are seen skating with no struggle of vision. They could have used torches if they were poor lighting. In the film, the lighting technique used is the key lighting. This is because the light prominently registers in the film. The main subject being focused is Joel and Clementine. As the scene continues, fill lights are used to fill in the shadows of the film(Butler). The other lighting technique that was used was hard lighting. This was evident when Joel was kneeling. There was a harsh souring light hitting Joel. This aimed at showing the place he was. It was a dark place around.
Editing
In the scene, their many editing techniques that were used. One of the methods used is the Cross dissolve technique. This technique was seen when Joel was trying to reflect on his past romantic experience with Clementine only to come back to the reality that it was only a fantasy. The other editing technique used is the smash cut technique (Butler). In this technique, the characters had been seen enjoying music and all of a sudden, the scene shifts to a silent scene.
Sound
The sound in the scene is a dialogue between the two characters. They are discussing their relationship. The other sounding technique used is Foley. In this technique, the sound effect is synchronized to the actions of the character (Butler). For example, when Clementine and Joel were running, the sound effect could be heard. And lastly, there was a piece of background music when the scene was starting. This was to provide the emotional aspect of the film.
