Statistics is an essential subject in today`s world. Statistics has established itself as an indispensable subject today, and more and more students are taking statistics courses. The myth that statistics is a tough question has been demystified, and students are now taking statistics classes. There has been a steady growth in the students taking statistics classes since the subject has become fun to study. Statistics apply to our everyday life, and it cuts across a lot of disciplines. Studying the course is therefore very paramount and necessary.
Expectations
At the start of the course, the main hope was on having a class that is more than an engaging and learning process. The course requires the active involvement of all parties from the teachers to the students. My other expectations were to learn different ways of identifying patterns, how to best conduct studies, the best application of probability, and the different simulations. I also wanted to learn about matrices since it forms the basis for studying statistics. Everyone was excited about being introduced to statics and learning the different concepts in statistics.
How the expectations are being met.
My expectations about the course have gained fulfillment to my satisfaction. Everyone in the class is having an active involvement in the teaching process because the teacher has an elaborate plan which ensures that everyone fully participates in the class work. The course has been aggressive since there are group works and other activities in the class, which enables the students to learn effectively. The teacher has also been instrumental in employing tactics that work in the delivery of the content, and therefore, students easily understand the concepts. I have been learning the different ideas in statistics, and thus, my knowledge of statistics has been improving.
Challenges
During the course, there have been several challenges that I have encountered in the studying process. There exist a prevalence of intuitive thinking, which I was previously using to help in solving mathematical problems. The intuitive thinking interfered with my learning of the correct way of solving mathematical problems. Another issue that I encountered was the lack of prerequisite knowledge of statistics. Before taking the course, I had not studied statistics anywhere else; therefore, I lacked an understanding of the basic concepts of statistics. Other students were experiencing similar problems too, and this was affecting the class, especially in the first few weeks.
How to overcome the challenges.
Though the problems were huge, I had to find a way of overcoming them to ensure that I will gain as much as I can from the statistics class. For the use of intuitive thinking in solving mathematical problems, I am trying to solve many issues but using a statistical approach which therefore helps in instilling the thinking of solving the problems using the right method. The lack of prior statistical knowledge was becoming a problem in the beginning, but I have been able to solve the problem by taking a lot of exercises on different topics. Practice makes perfect has been my motto since the beginning of the course.
Most effective learning methods
There are many methods that one can use to ensure that they acquire the maximum knowledge from a statistics class. The most effective way for me is the process of working on as many problems and exercises as possible. Another very effective technique is studying in groups with other statistics students at least once every week. I have been checking for the recurring themes in statistics and therefore telling the teacher to stress on the issues. Getting to know the problems before has helped by ensuring that I stay ahead of the teacher.
How effective are the methods
The methods that I have been employing in my studying have been enabling me to understand the different concepts and techniques for solving mathematical problems. Working on as many issues as possible has been helping me in knowing what to expect in a statistical paper and therefore sharpening my knowledge. Studying in groups has helped me in understanding the concepts better. The verbal exchange has been useful and has been enabling me to gain more understanding of how others understood different concepts. The different learning methods have been very beneficial to me.
Most useful statistical methods
Throughout the course, I have been learning different statistical methods, which will be very useful in helping me handle the various situations in real life. The most useful statistical method that I have seen to be very useful is the method of sample size determination. Sample size determination can be instrumental, especially in the research field. Many researchers are always having the problem of how to best determine the size of the sample depending on the population. The other statistical method that I have found useful is the method of hypothesis testing. Testing a hypothesis is helpful, especially in research, and this will be very useful in research projects.
Statistical concepts
The course contains many exciting ideas that I have been finding very useful. The idea of the statistical feature is especially very useful in helping one learn statistics. The concept includes the basic of statistics such as bias, variance, mean, median, and percentiles. The different ideas will help me in the bettering of my knowledge about statistics. Another quite useful concept is the concept of the probability distribution; the concept covers the whole probability idea and how to compute the probability. Calculating probability is very useful even in real life as it may help one make a decision.
Application
Statistics as a subject cuts across many fields and its need is in very many areas. This course in particular is a prerequisite in many other disciplines. The course is required before you continue pursuing other courses which will require mathematical skills. Basic statistical skills are necessary for many fields, especially mathematics-related courses. The powers that I have been acquiring during the course will help ensure that I do my researches well. A method such as a sample size determination and hypothesis theory will be helpful in the study for other subjects.
Generally, the course has been beneficial to me since it is helping me gain knowledge of the different aspects of statistics. The course has helped me be a better student since I have developed new studying habits which I did not have before I came to this class. The class has been very interactive, and I have felt like an essential member of the class since I have been participating continuously. Proper study methods and instrumental teachers are what has been making me perform better in the course.
