Social Media and Digital Identities

Social media have become a popular platform for connecting with people all around the world. It is used for both personal and professional aspects as social media is considered to be a huge platform for connecting with people and building relationships. However, all social media companies have identified the need for protecting their online communities from cyberbullying. With the emergence of technology and innovation, it has become more accessible for people to deal with various pressing issues. The study is based on the use of digital technology to prevent concerns like cyberbullying and data theft on one of the popular social media, Instagram. The technology discussed in the paper is artificial Intelligence. It is considered as a technology that has the objective of creating intelligent machines.

With the help of artificial Intelligence, the machine intends to learn from the gained experience, taking into consideration the new inputs along with the task performed by humans. It is engaged in building smart machines that have the capability of effective task performance. It is an endeavor to reflect human Intelligence in the computer by thinking and acting rationally and inhumanly behavior. It involves thought processes as well as reasoning. Also, it automates consistent learning using the available data by adding Intelligence and adopting the progressive learning algorithm. In addition to this, Artificial Intelligence evaluates the data in depth to achieve accuracy (Built In, 2019).

As per the opinion of Dinakar, Jones, Havasi, Lieberman & Picard (2012), it has been evaluated that the artificial Intelligence is one such technology that has a capability of fighting with cyberbullying which is one of the most severe issues that is faced by people on various social media platforms throughout the world. There are so many cases in which it has been found that the victims are suffering from the bullies on different social media platforms. Cyber bullying is an easy pathway to the private life of a person. These bullies are engaged in threatening actions and act hastily, leading to ruining the life of the victims. Artificial Intelligence serves as a solution prevention of cyberbullying (Zhang et al., 2018). Artificial Intelligence can recognize language nuances and categorize it on the extensive available data using algorithms to identify the cyberbullies and know about their online activities.

According to Wu (2019), it has been construed that Instagram is using Deep Text technology that is a deep learning-based text understanding engine. It has the potential of comprehending the thousands of textual contents that are posted every single second. Using Deep Text technology, it tries to remove the unwanted spam on the Instagram platform. Currently, it is using digital technology to reduce the number of online harassment and trolls. With the help of AI technologies, online harassment is identified, evaluated, and fake accounts are removed. In this way, cyberbullying can be reduced to a large extent.

According to Farrell (2019), it has been opined that in spite of using such developed technologies such as machine learning and artificial Intelligence, which helps in recognizing the harassment and online trolls’ incidents. It is still not the perfect and the ultimate measure to lower down the cyberbullying activities. Although artificial intelligence system uses the human data for training purpose and also for reviewing the content in order to validate the result accuracy, it has been found that on the Instagram social media, there are more complex cases in recognizing the harassment online by classifying the images and text. Taking into consideration the neutral book with the ineffective contextual meaning, it implies that it is not possible for the artificial intelligence system to comprehend all types of texts (Russell & Norvig, 2017). The technologies are improvised and updated consistently to get better and effective result and fix the issues pertaining to the usage of artificial intelligence technologies. In order to protect the online communities from cyberbullying, specific actions can be taken for better use of technology. There are specific tools that can be used, such as users can be blocked on Instagram, and reports can be placed against them on the first noticed activity. Artificial Intelligence can be used for flagging and policing the online activities on all the various social media platforms. However, there is a requirement of participating in the process to get a better and accurate result. By participating in learning and implementation along with modeling the effective online etiquettes, it will become possible for the artificial intelligence system to identify the anomalies (Özel, Saraç, Akdemir & Aksu, 2017). When the users are reported and blocked for their misbehavior online, artificial intelligence technology can take the help of the data efficiently. This will reduce the number of bullies, online trolls, and harassment. Also, IBM Watson technologies can be used for recognizing the self-harm and cyberbullying activities. In this system, the parents get the alert of misbehaviors so that they can take required actions (Broeckhoven, & De Troyer, 2013).

Artificial intelligence help in the everyday application by catering the daily needs. It can work for a long duration without getting distracted. Hence, artificial intelligence technology provides similar effective results at any time of the day, season, and month. In addition to this, artificial Intelligence can be used for handling the everyday barriers that is faced in smartphones and social media platforms. In both the personal and business world, artificial Intelligence supports social interactions by making it highly convenient. It is possible to deliver practical experience to the customers by understanding the potential of artificial Intelligence. Some of the social benefits that can be achieved by using artificial Intelligence are reducing child sexual abuse, reduction in data theft, and cyberbullying that takes place on social media. However, technology has always proved to be both beneficial and risky. Artificial Intelligence has the potential of indulging in devastating activities such as it can cause mass casualties. It might take into consideration the destructive method for achievement of the objectives (Dadvar, Jong, Ordelman & Trieschnigg, 2012). There are hackers who use artificial intelligence technology to achieve their threatening goals. Therefore, it is expected that there are well-qualified experts who can develop their insight on the activities that can be performed by artificial intelligence and try to make maximum use of the technology to benefit the society rather than creating further difficulties and risks.
