Speech Outline
Global Warming as The Latest Most Pressing Environmental Pandemic
To raise awareness on the extent to which global warming affects our life by harming the environment
To lead the audience into highlighting some of the active roles they can play to reduce and eliminate global warming
As a diligent activist on of environmental matters, I am here today to paint a very vivid picture of the world we live, and the role we have played in endangering our lives and of the other habitats as well. Global warming is one of the most pressing problems of our generation, given the rise of industrialization and the need to create a better modern society. However, as we move towards industrial innovation and the use of technology in production processes in agriculture as well, we have actively contributed to the degradation of air quality, leading to climate change. Despite this looming environmental danger, I believe we can reverse the effects of our industrial action, and create a safer and healthy environment if we commit ourselves to it. All of us, activists and citizens alike, have the moral obligation of inventing alternative sources to fossil fuels and take active measures to reduce our daily production of carbon dioxide as I will show you subsequently.
The impact of our actions on global warming is dire, and is seen clearly in the amount of fuel we use to power our homes, our cars and other activities is rapidly heating the planet. We live at a dispensation recording the hottest temperatures ever, and the most worrying fact is that we now record temperatures higher than anything that has ever been recorded in the past 12,000 years. This rapid rise in temperatures is drastically drying up our water bodies as well, with oceans rising to the point that is drying up the coral reefs, causing the extinction of many aquatic species and melting away the glaciers. The impact of global warming and climate change is also seen in the way hurricanes are becoming frequent, each one stronger and more destructive than the last. Hurricane Katrina primely exemplifies this sad reality. We cannot talk about global warming and forget all these painful nature wraths, as much as we may wish to overlook them. However, all hope is not lost, as I am about to show you.
We can overcome the challenges of the looming dangers of global warming by changing our lifestyle through effecting our use and production of carbon dioxide. Having identified the primary cause of global warming as fossil fuels, we need to be mindful of how we use this product and try as much as we can to limit its emission. One of the ways that we can achieve this task is by embracing recycle methods. Did you know that by recycling only half of our household wastes per year we could save up to 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide emitted through the production of other items? Another measure we can adopt in our homes that will go a long way in solving our current predicament is using compact fluorescent light bulbs that save up to 150 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. We should also reduce less hot water since it takes a lot of heat to heat one bath. We can supplement hot water by bathing during the day when it is warm and sunny outside.
You may probably not see it right now, but imagine how much carbon dioxide we will be saving in a decade through this simple yet efficient measures. We may think that industries and large greenhouse farms are the ones actively contributing to global warming, but we also need to consider our actions. A simple task like keeping our car tyres inflated properly improves gas mileage by more than 3%, with every gallon of gasoline saving 20 pounds of carbon dioxide. Imagine saving 40 pounds of carbon gas this way every week, how much pounds will that be in a month, a year, one decade down the line? Therefore, do not think that your impact is dismal because, in the long run, you will have contributed immensely in saving the world, and making it a habitable place for the future generation.
As I conclude, I would like to remind all of us that it is essential that each of us realizes the active role we play in contributing to global warming. Big processing companies may play their significant roles in eliminating global warming by going eco-friendly, but it requires our collective efforts. So, the next time you drive on eco-friendly, change that kitchen bulb to a fluorescent one or recycle your household waste, do not concern yourself with the dismal amount of carbon dioxide you are saving at that point, but consider the bigger picture. In the fight to make the world a better place, and to restore our healthy natural environment to what it was a few decades ago, no effort is too big, and none is small. I sincerely hope that we will all learn to play our small roles in a big way.
