Sophocles Oedipus

The best way to tell a story is by connecting the outfit, the set, and the acting as it adds a little dramatic flair to the whole film. The setting of this film is based on justice, duty, and obedience.  The costumes have designed to fit the character’s role perfectly. The acting is entirely dramatic and rhythmic based on the mood of the film and aimed at triggering emotions.

The costume reflects back to the time when this piece was written. Both men and women wore a tunic in the film with claps thrown over the shoulders. The women also had broaches over their shoulders. The male would also put on cloaks or mantles.  In the film’s special occasion, they wore a peplum that was wound around the body.  For the footwear, they had strings tied.  The three people (Oedipus, Jocasta, Creon) in power had a different outfit.  The brooches on the queen’s dress look ominous.

The setting of this film is in the ancient city of Thebes. The setting does not change at any other point; may it should imply that the people here were united. There is a plague that has made the city so barren and unattractive. So, the city is in the grip of a crisis, the place where tragedy unfolds.  The film is about a royal palace in the city. The outer palace scenes would have three doors through which characters entered and exited the stage and also an altar.  Many steps down, let to the orchestra; this is where the Chorus was situated.  The characters carried torches, which indicated that it was night. There was no special effect, maybe to maintain the place as sacred. There was no curtain to drop between scenes, so the passage of time was mentioned by characters. The god recognized by the performance of the plays was Dionysus, who was known for his subversive revelry.

The play is remarkable for its melancholy and beauty, the power of its lyric odes, and its majestic characterization. The king is renowned for his intelligence, but he’s blind to the truth about himself.  He actually killed his biological father and married his biological mother, unknowingly.  Now they have a son by the name Antigone. A plague has stricken the citizens. The plague will end, only if the one who killed the first king will be found and punished. He conducts an investigation and finds out that he actually killed the first king. When the queen finds out, she is guilt-stricken to the point of hanging herself up. The king, on the other hand, decides to blind himself. He wonders for many years before coming back to the sacred grove where he was promised protection of the Theseus.

Issues approached in the play are fate, self-discovery, pride, and fall, ignorance and guilt, and shame. From the beginning, the plague is an illustration of sin and guilt, and someone has to be banished for the people to be free of the plague.  Oedipus stays blind to the consequences of his action. He does not know that the old man he killed on the highway could be his father. The blind prophet can still see things on the other hand. Oedipus takes pride in his past exploit, which ends up being very shameful, and he cannot even stand the guilt.  Oedipus grew to know who he really was, and the journey of self-discovery was not any easy has it lead to his downfall. Oedipus affects his fate when the truth is revealed. Jocasta could not take in the truth. Instead, she decides to hang herself.
