The gastrointestinal system
The gastrointestinal system determines the growth of a person and also animals
It is responsible for the absorption of nutrients and removal of the useless materials from the body
It is made up of many organs along the mouth-anus canal
It is also very important to the immune system
However, the GT system is highly prone to many different diseases.
The gastrointestinal system consists of organs like the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines and anus. They all have different functions in the digestive system. It is speculated that the exposed surface of the GT system amount to approximately 30 square meters and hence contains many immune components to ensure pathogens are not absorbed in the lymph circulatory system or the blood. Nevertheless, the system is vulnerable to diseases like gastrointestinal cancer, inflammatory infections and conditions, diverticular disease, gastrointestinal functioning disorders and autoimmune conditions. Regular check-ups and assessment of the system should be done to ensure its functionality and the health of the patient.
