SCENARIO 2 2

Hypothyroidism is a thyroid condition which occurs when the thyroid glands are not functioning properly; the state causes retarded growth both in children and also in adults. The low activity of these glands affects the body metabolism process and affects the body’s use of energy. The metabolism regulation failure leads to increased body weight (Ruggenthaler, Grass., Huber, & Reischl 2017). The patient is currently suffering from hypothyroid. Myxedema is a more severe form of hormone deficiency in the body.

Levothyroxine sodium brings the balance in body metabolism by providing more thyroid hormone to the patient. The medication is administered orally but can also be injected directly into a vein. The doctors prescription should be strictly adhered to during the medication period. The medication, however, should not be administered to patient who recently had suffered from heart attack.

The nurse must be aware of the patient medical history before they can start administering the medication. If the patient for instance is under medication with drugs which cause interaction in the absorption of thyroxine the nurse should know so as to offer a second option to the patient. Some thyroid conditions may require radiation monitoring to access either the treatment progress or undertake the initial diagnosis. The patient needs to be informed on the side effects of the process; this is necessary to prepare the patient psychologically. The information given enables the patient to note any deviation from the common side effect and therefore be in a place to seek medical attention promptly.

Levothyroxine can be ineffective to patients who have diabetes; this is because they can increase the blood sugar. The patient will need a metformin dosage adjustment during the treatment; the doctor may prescribe the deity requirement during medication.
