IOM which stands for the Institute for Medicine, in 2010 released a report; “the future of nursing.” The report has impacts on levels of individualism, organizational as well as policy levels. It is meant to improve health care and patients’ outcome in the whole world across ones’ life with nursing playing a key role in the outcome.
The purpose of the IOM report and what it means to nurse
To raise awareness of the medical, functional, and psychological consequence of cancer and its treatment.
Define quality health care for cancer survivors and identify strategies to achieve it.
Improve the quality of life of cancer survivors through policies to ensure access to psychological services, fair employment practice, and health insurance.
To adopt transformational leadership and evidence based management, maximizing the capability of the work force, understanding the work of progress that they can be improved and creating and sustaining culture of safety.
Focus on teaching ‘nurse think’ intellectual training for it is not a place or inordinate teaching of taxonomies and disease classification but rather to practice reasoning how to apply knowledge.
Teaches clinical reasoning and judgment more in depth than critical thinking. Referred by Banner as time of ‘situated learning’ with strong clinical faculty.
Focuses on social roles or morals and ethical behavior. This is aimed at integrating knowledge of the underpinnings of the discipline’s values, ethics and social roles.
Focuses on basic organizational and systems leadership for quality care and patient health outcomes.
