An operating system or OS is a program that acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware and controls the execution of all kinds of programs. The operating system is a vital component of the system software in a computer system. Before the 1960s, human operators generally ran computers manually, and nowadays, the development of operating systems greatly improved the efficiency of computers. The operating system has also eliminated much of the manual work formerly required to process programs. The present era of globalization, modernization, and development has made the operating system available for different types of computers, mobile devices, and embedded devices. Some operating systems are proprietary, while others are open source. There are many numerous examples of proprietary and open-source operating systems that we can use in our daily lives.

First and foremost, an Open-source operating system is a type of operating system software that has source codes that are made available to the public to use or modify from its original design. At the same time, only a license is required before use. People can download it into their Personal Computer, desktop computer, notebook, or Laptop for free and use or sometimes make changes to it. The Linux operating system and the UNIX operating system are examples of this type of operating system. These two systems stem from other popular versions that apply to users to alter their designs, such as the Ubuntu version. The Linux and UNIX operating systems remain simple, accessible, and open to the General public. Overall the open source can be referred to as the incomplete software. Furthermore, both system types differ greatly.

Other than that, the most popular open-source operating system is also Android, which is based on a modified version of the Linux kernel. To be specific, Android is a revolutionary name which is an open-source software assemble of an operating system, middleware, and key applicationsfor mobile devices. In 2005, Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc, and developed it. Android’s mobile operating system is based on a modified version of the Linux kernel. Then, Proprietary operating systems are also known as non-free software, or closed-source software, are computer software for which the software’s publisher or another person retains intellectual property rights—usual copyright of the source code,[1] but sometimes patent rights. Proprietary operating systems cannot be modified by users or other companies. For example, Windows and OS X are both proprietary OSes. The Windows source code is owned by Microsoft, and the OS X source code is owned by Apple. Other companies can make programs that run on these operating systems, but they cannot modify the OS itself. Unlike open-source software, the internal structure of proprietary software is not exposed, and the restrictions are imposed upon the users by the End User License Agreement (EULA), the conditions of which are to be legally followed by the end-users regarding the software.

Last but not least, For non-tech-savvy individuals, proprietary operating systems like proprietaryand OS X make the overall user experience simpler and smoother. The wider range of options available in open source reduces the out-of-the-box appeal of the product as it requires users to set preferences and configure the system to their liking. A proprietary system may be frustrating for individuals who like to control and tweak various aspects of their operating system. Companies who design proprietary operating systems may make it intentionally difficult, and sometimes impossible, to change or even view the source code. Software companies generally want to protect the integrity of their product and prevent individuals from stealing proprietary knowledge by viewing sensitive source code.

In conclusion, an operating system is the one that leads to many different kinds of Operating systems today, such as UNIX, Microsoft Windows, and macOS. Without it, then people have difficulties doing their errands. There are two types of operating systems that we can choose to use, whether open source or proprietary, and both have their importance and value. Open-source refers to the software whose source code is available for anybody to access and modify, while proprietary software refers to the software which is solely owned by the individual or publisher who developed it.
