Pursuing medical health in physical therapy
Most students choose the medical field career path due to the desire to help people or due to experiences that channel them towards the path. Coming from a humble background, and growing up with a mother who was involved in a fatal car accident five years ago and has been forced to live under support has boosted my passion for pursuing medical health in physical therapy. This is to gain more knowledge on how to care for her and other people who find themselves in similar circumstances. Over the years living in a demanding environment, I have gained unique attributes, including being supportive, compassionate, cooperative, and being resilient, which will add to the diversity of the Upstate Medical University community and have an impact on my interactions with patients.
Being the eldest of my siblings, I have sound myself in experiencing heart to heart conversations with my mother as many times she felt vulnerable and at her lowest moments during the recovery period. During this period, I have been able to maintain control of the situation by being supportive and other times, creating a sense of humor to ease the tension. I have also been compassionate and offered sympathy when needed during this period to ease her trauma and make her feel cared for. With the need to have somebody attending to her, I have developed a quality of being cooperative and always ready to meet needs. Being resilient has helped me cope with situations when emotions are high and remain calm.
With all the experience I have gained caring for my mother, it will be easy to deal with patients I will work with as a Physical Therapist. I will show compassion to them since I can relate what they are going through. I will also be supportive, both emotionally and physically, providing health-conscious therapy. I will also use my prowess communication skills to show cooperation and charge their families to show them full support in the recovery process. Working with patients going through phases, my ability to tolerate changes in mood, and deep emotions will help me endure the stress and serve my patients the best way possible.
Having run my daily life under an environment with a family member who needs physical therapy, I have acquired characteristics that have helped me maneuver. I have learned how to be supportive to those needing extra emotional and physical care and being compassionate and tenderhearted when dealing with patients showing them deep awareness of their suffering. Also, being available for them when they need someone to help them and managing stress that might come along when dealing with them. This, in turn, will impact my interaction with patients as well as add to the diversity of the university.
