Product Development Project: Phase 2

The product is a watch strap

For this phase of the project you will do the following activities:

  1. Determine product architecture (Chapter 10 Assignment)
  2. Apply industrial design (ID) principles (Chapter 11 Assignment)
  3. Apply design for manufacturing (DFM) principles (Chapter 13 Assignment)
  4. Apply robust design (RD) principles(Chapter 15 Assignment)
  5. Create a finished design.
  6. Prepare your final project report and a PowerPoint presentation. The final report file and your PowerPoint file are due in Canvas by 8:00 A.M. on December 8th. You will deliver your presentation during the final exam period, on December 8th between 8:00 and 10:00 A.M.

Determine Product Architecture

Based on the product concept you created during Phase 1 of the project, create a product architecture that defines the product’s top-level configuration, all sub-assemblies (if any are to be included in the design),all components, all aspects of the design that can be customized, and how the components fit together.  The architecture must be modular, meaning that there must be something about your design architecture that allows for the product to integrate with the standard mounting system for GoPro cameras.  Your design documentation must include sketches and written descriptions to define the architecture.  In your report, describe the process you used and the decisions you made as you developed theschematic concept of the product into an architectural model.

Further requirements are detailed below:

  1. Provide a written description and sketches of how you divided the product into chunks or sections
  2. Create a schematic of the chunks, similar to Exhibit 10-7 in your textbook
  3. Create a graphical representation of your product’s architecture
  4. Analyze the potential incidental interactions between chunks of the design, similar to the process described in Exhibit 10-9 in your textbook.Consider all of the following:
    1. Incidental interactions among the components of your design.
    2. Incidental interactions with any GoPro-compatible devices that are used jointly with your product.
    3. Incidental interactions with the camera’s user and the environment (bystanders, facilities, objects in the surroundings, nature, etc.)

Apply Industrial Design Principles

After finalizing the product’s architecture, analyze your designusing selected Industrial Design principles, as outlined below.  Consider the needs of customers and otherstakeholders are as you complete this part of the assignment.

Requirements

  1. Based on your product architecture, create design sketches for your product in its assembled state and of each piece individually. These sketches should be sufficiently well developed that they represent your actual intended design. Create written descriptions of the parts and how of how your product will function.
  2. Provide a list of the design features that will be strongly correlated with applying ID principlesto optimize the product.
  3. Evaluate your design using Industrial Design principles shown below. Use your own thoughts, share your design with other people and ask for feedback, and examinesimilar products. The principles to consider are as follows:
    1. Utility
    2. Appearance
    3. Easeof use
    4. Ease of product care
    5. Durability
  4. Discuss the results of your analyses from step 3. Describe your thoughts and the information you gathered from other sources. Describe any shortcomings you found in your current design. Be methodical; consider each principle of Industrial Design and how it relates to each aspect of your design
  5. Refine your initial design, based on your analyses from steps 3& 4. Describe what you changed and why you changed it. Update your sketches as needed.

Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM) Principles

Use the DFM method as outlined in the middle portion of Exhibit 13-3. Analyze your design in terms of its potential impacts on component costs and assembly costs. Consider possible changes to your design, and possibilities for using standard components. Refine your design based on your analysis. Include your changes in a refined sketch.  Describe what you modified and why you did so.

Create a Finished Design

Create a pre-production design for your product, including an appearance rendering of your assembled product and detailed drawings for each component.  Neatly sketch the assembled product; alternately you may create a 3d CAD model or a digital artistic rendering, if you have such skills.  Describe why you made the refinements to your design. The design you illustrate must be in its most recent state, incorporating the ideas, requirements, and specifications that you have determined throughout the project.  You must turn in your assembly drawing and your detail drawings.Paste these drawings into your Word document or upload them as separate jpg or pdf files. Your drawings do not need to include dimensions and tolerances. If you used 3D cad to design a solid model, you may optionally submit the file in Solidworks format.

Final Report Presentation Requirements

Create a final report and a presentation that youwill deliver to the class on final exam day, which is Thursday, December 8th, at 8:00 AM.The report and presentation must meet the following requirements:

  1. Your final report will combine all of the elements from both phases of the project into one document. Use the assignment outlines to divide your report into sections.  If you made revisions and improvements to earlier assignments, then include the newest revisions.
  2. Create a PowerPoint presentation. The presentation should provide a high-level overview of your design and the criteria you used to make major design decisions. You do not need to enumerate of outline every step of the design process or describe every detail of your analyses. You must be concise yet informative, so that you can communicate important details, coherently and within the given time limit.
  3. You will deliver this presentation on final exam day (December 8th at 8:00 A.M.). The presentation must be between 3 and 4 minutes long.
  4. Show your design renderings during the presentation.
  5. Upload your PowerPoint file, your written report, and any supporting images, PDF files, or CAD files to Canvas.
  6. Your file uploads are due before the beginning of class on final exam day.
