Living with massive stroke
A family friend of ours suffered a massive stroke, which led him to being bedridden. It happened so fast that I sympathized with the situation and decided to help in every way I could since he could not do anything. Being bedridden meant he depended on somebody entirely in everything that he needed.
My main jobs were several, which included turning him in bed every two hours. I had to stay around him so that whenever he got tired of sleeping on one side, I would be there to turn him to the other side. I would have a routine which included bathing him at 3 pm every day. The colostomy bag was my job, whereby I would change it now and then after being used and also emptying the catheter after it got full. Medicines were many and needed one to be keen to avoid confusion, and I ensured that he took his medication on time and the quantity the doctor had advised.
Mealtimes were in my routine, and I would give him food four times a day through a peg tube. Feeding him was not as hard as the other services of turning him and changing his colostomy bag.
Once in a while during the day, I would light clean him and massage his legs so that they would not lock. This worked very well for him because he would relax his muscles. I would ensure he stays well-groomed by cutting his nails, combing his hair, and when need be, I will trim it a little bit just like he would want it done. Keeping his skin moisturized and glowing was part of what I was doing to make sure he was well taken care of. He was ever clean, groomed, and well-fed throughout the time that I helped him.
